Historic Sadak Yatra From Kolkota To Puri

Sarojini Nayak
02/28/2011

The Sri Sri Jagannath Sadak Sagada Yatra is a unique journey on bullock cart to retrace the old Jagannath Sadak from Kolkata to Puri that was once a lifeline for pilgrims. This road, often referred as the Orissa Trunk Road was also taken by the marauding armies of the Mughals and Marathas. Once the railways became operational, this road lost its importance. Yet, its sanctity has not been lost as devotees still pay obeisance to this road that leads to Srikhetra.

Many remnants of this road are still visible, while large tracts have been encroached by villages and the National Hiahgway No 5. There are several temples, holy tanks and ruins of dharmshalas that once provided amenities to travelers. This Sadak Yatra is an attempt to retrace this route as a heritage trail, highlight its importance in Orissan culture and also to documents the heritage sites that are fast fading into oblivion.

The Sadak Yatra will start from Kolkata on March 6, 2011 from the Jagannath temple at Khidderpore. Two bullock carts and hundreds of devotees will wind their way through the districts of Hoogly, Howrah, Midnapore, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurdha and Puri. During the stopovers, hospitality will be provided by local villages. While one cart will carry images of the holy trinity, the other will carry a large cauldron in which water from all holy rivers, ponds and wells on the way will be collected. On reaching Puri, this water will be merged with the Bay of Bengal with the performance of a Samudra Arati.

Scientific teams from the archeology, history and geography departments from different universities will help in the identification and documentation of the road, the ruins and other monuments. The findings in the form of a report will be submitted to the Orissa Government and also uploaded on the website www.jagannathsadak.com Many students have volunteered to work on this project and collect oral history relating to the Sadak.
