Music is universal! Music has influenced human beings from time immemorial from the thousands of years old ‘Samaveda’, which is full of music, to the modern times.  Music has influenced human existence in more ways than others from offering a pleasant acoustic and entertaining experience, a medium of communication to exhibiting curative powers of healing.  The ancient system of ‘Nada Yoga’ practiced the use of sound vibrations to uplift one’s consciousness by stimulating and controlling the brain waves with the help of ragas complimenting the therapeutic practice, also known as ‘Raga Chikitsa’.

Several historical anecdotes can be cited to the healing powers of music.  It is believed that Saint Thyagaraja, of the musical trinity, once brought alive a dead man with his Bilahari musical composition. Swami Haridas, Guru of Tansen, King Akbar’s court musician, is believed to have cured a dying queen of Emperor Akbar with his music.  According to ancient Indian text on music ‘Swara Shastra’ the 72 Mela-karta ragas (Parent ragas) in Carnatic music control the 72 nerves in the human body.  It is believed that singing the ragas with devotion and purity (of both raga and shruti) can favorably influence the corresponding nerves in the body.  Even in the western world Musical Therapy is increasingly recognized as a beneficial form of therapy for patients suffering from health issues such as blood pressure, trauma, hypertension, and various chronic problems.  According to American Music Therapy Association the Therapeutic benefits of music were recognized as early as Aristotle and Plato.

It is a unique opportunity for the New England community to experience the greatness and therapeutic value of Indian classical music through the upcoming concert by Prof. Hair Haran Iyer at the David Mindess School in Ashland.  This event is organized by the Youth, Cultural, and Educational Programs (YCEP) committee of the New England Hindu Temple, Inc.

Prof. Hari Haran Iyer is an accomplished exponent of Carnatic classical music. He was initiated by his mother, who is also his Guru, over 4 decades ago.  He had the fortunate opportunity of being trained both in the traditional Gurukula system as well as musical institutional training.  Dr. Hari Haran specializes in Music Education and Music Therapy and has achieved several distinctions with a Master’s and Ph.D. degrees both from India and United States.  He finds great happiness in healing individuals who need and benefit from his style of Indian Musical Therapy.  He has traveled extensively attending international conferences and conducting workshops in US, UK, Japan, Korea, Australia and several other countries.  He is the recipient of the Sangeeta Nataka Academy and Rajiv Gandhi Excellence awards.  Along with his mother and Guru, Dr. Hari Haran has written over 40 books and 50 research papers on various aspects of Indian music and musical therapy.

YCEP is honored and proud to host Prof. Hari Haran’s concert to benefit the New England community.  In addition, YCEP conducts several cultural events at the Sri Lakshmi Temple (NEHTI) such as Nrityanjali (Shivaratri), Krishnanjali (Janmashtami), Naadanjali (Navaratri), Composer’s day music program, Purandara Dasa Aradhana and several invited artists’s presentations throughout the year to attract and encourage youth in large numbers.  Annually, YCEP awards scholarships to accomplished youth in music (both Hindustani and Carnatic styles) and dance achievements.  YCEP also conducts Sanskrit classes and the Bala Vidya Mandir (BVM) classes at the Sri Lakshmi temple to impart the knowledge of Hindu heritage and culture to our children and youth.

I would like to encourage our community to actively participate in the current major event of Musical Therapy lecture/demonstration and concert by Prof. Hari Haran Iyer and continue to support YCEP and Sri Lakshmi Temple and its activities.
