Ayurveda is a complete system of health care. It is derived from 2 Sanskrit words “ayus” and “ved” meaning life and knowledge respectively. It is a complete guide on food and nutrition also giving a glimpse of ancient traditions and practices on such related features like the right time to have food, food for different constitutions of person ,effect of wrong type of diet on one’s life, information on what to eat and the right  way of eating.
A wholesome diet is essential not only for maintaining good health but also for fighting diseases. All diseases are caused by aggravation of three doshas  i.e, vata, pitta and kapha which is mainly caused by the intake of improper diet. In Ayurveda there are positive and negative attributes of diet. Since, Ayuveda deals with the holistic approach to healing; it covers the diet factor in depth. In Ayurveda food is considered not only a mixture of basic ingredients like proteins, vitamins, fats and carbohydrates but something which nourishes the body and is also  a source of energy for mind and soul.

Ayurveda has categorized food into three types based on its basic quality A) The Satvic or spiritual quality B) Rajasic or Energetic quality C) Tamasic or negatively charged quality. It is said whatever food we eat affects our mind in accordance with its basic quality. Satvic food is enriching and elevates while Rajasic food has a tendency to energise a person towards materialism and Tamsik food promotes a selfish way of living.
Though different kinds of diet are suggested in ayurveda , there is no specific diet which can be said to be ideal for every human body. However the following points may be considered while consuming food:
