In Conversation With Dr. Pratap Midha

07/06/2010

Dr. Pratap Kumar Midha, MD, serves as the medical director for the J. Watumull Global Hospital and Research Centre in Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India. He was in Boston recently on an invitation of the Brahmakumaris which included  a whirlwind tour of Orlando, Columbia and Ecuador, and San Francisco, The idea behind his visit was to talk about meditation, to forge partnerships, and finds ways to support the Charity hospital that he runs in Mount Abu.

When it comes to healing in medicine, how important can meditation play a role? “It is  quite significant” says Dr Midha. “The technique is so simple that its appeal is universal. It has no rituals,  no affinity to religion and it is very scientific,” he says. Dr Midha has been practicing Raja Yoga meditation for more than 40years and was invited by the Brahmakumaris to set up this hospital. The mission hospital, has more than 300  staff  members where over 60 of them are Brahma kumari volunteers.  The hospital treats a spectrum of diseases and major research has been done in the area heart disease.

Dr Midha urges  that daily practice is essential since stress is part of our daily lives. According to him, meditation means not merely closing your eyes but true mindfulness comes from adopting certain values and code of conduct, and having a meditative attitude to life. A half hour of early morning meditation will help to start the day well. With constant practice and discipline, each one of us can benefit from meditation and help us lead a more purposeful life.

The hospital at Mount Abu is funded exclusively with private donations and equipped with state of the art medical facilities. Many tribal families cannot afford medical care and therefore the hospital also runs mobile health clinics covering around 20 to 25 village in its vicinity every week. Tribal women are also counseled on how to manage their health and families,  They are supported in their work through local NGO’s like Children’s Hope India, Smile Train, Point of Life etc. At the Global Hospital, patients are poor and cannot afford treatment. To bridge this gap, the hospital combines modern medicine with alternative treatments including acupuncture, ayurveda, electromagnetic therapy, visualizations and Raj yoga meditation.
