Film Review - Kehta Hai Dil Bar Bar

Title: Kehta Hai Dil Baar Baar
Starring: Jimmy Shergill, Kim Sharma, Paresh Rawal
Director: Rahul Dholakia
Music: Jatin Lalit

The first film of Bollywood to be shot entirely on American soil under the supervision of American and Indian technicians starring Paresh Rawal, Jimmy Shergill and Kim Sharma succeeds in being a super entertainer. Playing on Indian American stereotypes the movie tries to make fun of the "Typical Indian American" dad!

The story revolves around three principal characters – Ranchodlal Patel (Paresh Rawal) a Gujarati businessman who refers to himself as "The Roger Patel", though he likes his 'Theplas', Dr. Ritu Patel (Kim Sharma), a resident of New York Hospital, who cannot do anything that annoys her father and Sunder Kapoor (Jimmy Shergill) owns a mobile Indian food unit called 'India on Wheels'.

The story is based on Hollywood’s “Meet the Parents”. Roger Patel is a successful Indian American who has migrated from Gujarat to Edison, New Jersey. A shrewd hotel owner, a loving and possessive father of two beautiful daughters (Kim Sharma and Toral Mehta), Roger’s greatest concern is finding the right match for his daughters. The ever-cautious Roger Patel insists on a son-in-law who is a 3P – 'a Professional Patel owning a Property'. Inevitably Sunder and Ritu fall in love to the utter chagrin of “The Roger Patel” Ritu wants to marry Sunder. She brings Sunder home to meet her parents.

In his eagerness to win Roger Patel over, Sunder keeps goofing up, and Roger Patel snaps at him at every opportunity. Thus begins a cat and mouse game where each one tries to get the better of the other, leading to a hilarious confrontation between the two men. The family tries to balance the impossible…

The movie is very light hearted and entertaining. Even though this was his maiden attempt for direction on the large screen, ad man Rahul Dholakia has done a great job. Paresh Rawal delivers a superb performance as usual. While Jimmy Shergill delivered a decent performance, Kim Sharma was disappointing. The music by Jatin-Lalit is decent. A fun movie to watch with the whole family. (You may identify with some of the Indian American stereotype depicted by the characters:-)
