Press Release 02/24/2010 Improving Intergenerational Communication among South Asian Youth and Families: Finding the Balance A two-part workshop for South Asian parents and youth. Discussions on how intergenerational and cross cultural communications can be improved. Conversations facilitated by experts in building healthy parent–child relationships. Workshop I on March 13, 2-4 pm, Burlington Public Library The IGC workshop will assist South Asian families to understand the complexities of cross cultural communication. Children and parents will share experiences of adjusting to another culture while maintaining their own. Multiple viewpoints about the causes of conflict in the home will be heard and results from the Saheli community survey will be shared. Professionals from the community will facilitate discussions. Workshop II on March 27, 10:30 am-3:00 pm, Burlington Senior Center 10:30-12:30 pm. Professionals in the field will show ways to reduce conflict between generations in a respectful and culturally sensitive way. They will discuss how to reduce conflict in extended, close-knit families, and show children, parents and grandparents how to seek help as needed. 12:30-1:30 pm Free Lunch 1:30 -3:00 pm. More information from the Saheli community surveys will be shared. Public Safety and school officials will discuss what problems they confront and discuss ways to keep South Asian families safe. Saheli members will share resources to build healthy parent-child communication. Youth participating in the workshops will receive a $10 gift certificate!
