Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association Riyadh organized a Seminar on the topic “How to get your Child admitted into a college of their Dreams or Yours.†On Wednesday 16th December 2009 at the Sholay Banquet Hall in Olaya. The Key Note Speaker was Prof. Anil Saigal of Tufts University, Massachusetts, USA.
It was appropriately timed as the question is prevailing in the minds of Students & teachers alike considering the looming final Examinations. Hence a large gathering of Teachers & Students from Different Indian Schools in Riyadh and concerned Parents along with the Aligarian fraternity assembled to listen to the distinguished speaker and seek answers for their lingering questions.
As is customary the Evening started with the recitation of Holy Quran by Mr. Muneeb a student of Indian International School Riyadh.
The Vice President of AMUOBA Riyadh anchored the evening and set the ball rolling by inviting the Guests on the dais. The Chief Guest and the Keynote Speaker Prof. Anil Saigal; Mrs. Ranjani Saigal & Mr. Manzar Jamal Siddiqui were presented flower bouquets by Mr. Humayoun Hashmi AMUOBA Joint Secretary and Mr. Shahnawaz AMUOBA Treasurer.
In his Welcome address the President of AMUOBA Riyadh Welcomed & Thanked the guests and the audience for their attendance. He said that one of AMUOBA Riyadh main focus is to carry forward the educational movement initiated by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and today’s presentation is a small step in that direction. He said that as a Parent he had gone through this critical phase and had experienced closely the questions going through a Student’s and Parents mind about getting into a proper college. This was the sole motivation to organize such a seminar as many students from Riyadh are about to leave for colleges after board exams. He hoped that it will benefit the community and promised for many other such educational programmes in future too.
The Chair Person of the Evening Mr. Manzar Jamal Siddiqui Principal Indian International School Riyadh spoke on length about the changes happening around the world and the need to tune ourselves with the
changing times. He said that apart from academic knowledge it is vital that today’s generation develop Soft Skills which are important for the total PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT of an individual. The traditional professions of Engineering and medicine have been replaced with new subjects as BioTechnology, Information technology, Nanotechnology etc which represent a tangential change.
Mr. Siddiqui elaborated that what SIR SYED AHMAD KHAN Envisioned 135 years Back is still relevant today and is considered as the need of the hour for a successful career and human being.
The Keynote Speaker made an exhaustive Power Point Presentation on the Topic which covered subjects as to what the Universities are looking for, how the students are evaluated and the requirements of major Universities. From the students point of view he explained the points to be considered while selecting a University and assess the Merits & Demerits. His advice to the students was to be vigilant in selecting their carrier at +2 level. He further said that the students should also be involved in extra curricular activities and not confined to the curriculum. Most of American Universities give substantial weight-age to the extra curricular activities be it either in the form of Social Service , Fine Arts , Sports Etc. A word of advice for parents was to go with the interests of the child and not force their choice on them. His presentation covered a wide diaspora of Universities from both India & USA. Later Mrs. & Mr. Anil Saigal took up questions from the Audience which added further to the knowledge of audience and cleared many doubts lingering in their minds.
At the end of the presentation President of AMUOBA Riyadh presented a Memento to the Chief guest Mr. Anil Saigal for Cherishing the Vison of Sir Syed and accepting to be the guest of Aligarh Muslim University Old Boy’s Association- Riyadh.
AMUOBA Riyadh is grateful to Federation of Aligarh Alumni Association USA and its President Mr. Ali Rizvi whose efforts have facilitated this seminar. Sitting thousands of miles away he is concerned with the future of our children demonstrates that he is a true beacon of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s Legacy. No words are enough to thank him and Federation of Aligarh Alumni Association USA for their cooperation.
The vote of thank was presented by the General Secretary of AMUOBA Riyadh Taquiuddin Mir followed by Dinner. The response to the event was overwhelming and we apologize as we could not accommodate all the requests of persons who wanted to attend the seminar due to space constraint.
