TiE–Boston to host Arun Shourie, noted Indian parliamentarian and writer on Oct 7th.

Arun Shourie, India’s noted journalist, Parliamentarian, intellectual, economist and policy expert will be speaking on "India's response to the economic meltdown and what lies ahead" in a special event sponsored by TiE-Boston at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Thursday, October 7, 2009. We invite you to come hear Arun Shourie speak on how India is dealing with the economic meltdown, how the top-most levels of the Indian government are making decisions on how to re-energize the Indian economy, and what lies ahead.

Mr. Shourie has been a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, a Minister of Disinvestment, Communication and Information Technology in the Government of India (1998-2004), an economist with the World Bank (1968-72 & 1975-77), editor of India's two largest newspapers - the Indian Express and Times of India, and a consultant to the Indian Planning Commission.

As a Member of Parliament (MP) in 2000, Mr. Shourie used his discretionary spending to create the Department of Bio-Sciences & Bio-Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur (IIT-Kanpur). He reinforced his commitment to scientific research and education when he pledged another large sum (11 crores) to IIT Kanpur in order to develop the departments of Environmental Sciences and Environmental Engineering.

During his tenure as the Minister of Disinvestment, Communication and Information Technology in the cabinet of Prime Minister Vajpayee, Mr. Shourie worked to liberalize and open the public sector companies to more market influences.  

Over the span of his career as a journalist, Mr. Shourie has uncovered corruption within high-levels of Indian governance with The Indian Express and The Times of India, and published numerous books and columns. Mr. Shourie’s writings are known for being pointed and outspoken, and have taken the form of courageous journalism. His investigative news stories and publications have revealed a vision for better governance, quality education and economic development for all citizens of India.

The Global Financial Crisis has impacted the Indian financial markets and India's economic growth. In his talk, Mr. Shourie will be addressing how India is dealing with the meltdown and commenting on the different policy initiatives being proposed to tackle the crisis.

Arun Shourie has a Ph.D. in Economics. Mr. Shourie is the recipient of numerous awards such as the Padma Bhushan, the Magsaysay Award, the Dadabhai Naoroji Award, the Astor Award, the K.S. Hegde Award, the International Editor of the Year Award and The Freedom to Publish Award.
