Blue is a film awaiting release on October 16th.  The film is packed with racy and pacy music by A.R.Rahman and as such has the listeners really eager and worked up about the quality that our very own Oscar winner has come up with for this film!  The album is a mash of genres and has jazz flowing copiously with some metal, rock and Indian folk and classical thrown in for good measure!!

Aaj Dil – starts off with African-like chants and Indian humming and then progresses into this totally funky jazz tune – the chords progression in both the refrain and verse are truly interesting and Shreya and Sukhwinder backed up with a very efficient chorus shine and sparkle indeed throughout the song.

Fiqrana – sung by Vijay Prakash and Shreya – fast paced and again nothing out of the ordinary – but the song has its moment, with first rate rhythm and percussion sections  - excellent strings, wind and synthesizer accompaniment– love the guitar interludes – gives it a very sixties feel…

Rehnuma – starts off heavily jazzy and then blends into rock mode and keeps alternating – Shreya is heavily seductive and husky and this song showcases her range – the background seems very suspiciously inspired by the Led Zeppelin track Kashmir – it is too similar to be a coincidence……….yet, the song holds up for its own merits and has Sonu and Shreya sounding dazzling and vibrant.

Bhoola tujhe - a slow and heavy song sung with lots of passion by Rashid Ali – the opening is rich and opulent as strings are overlapped with soprano humming.  The tune is rather predictable but is saved by the brilliant violin section that resounds throughout the song.  Rashid Ali is competent, given that the tune he is given sounds very similar to a number of older Rahman and even some Pritam tunes.

Blue theme – nothing unusual and honestly, all songs of Blaaze just sound like each other – as always big on the rap and bhangra beats.

Chiggy Wiggy – really…how much more silly can lyrics get……….a song that seems to be as predictable and mundane as the lyrics that seem to have been specially written for Kylie Minogue.  Sonu Nigam’s entry and the corresponding bhangra beats the song transitions into resuscitate the song ever so slightly!  As for the song becoming popular, your guess is as good as mine…………the video promotion is available on YouTube for those who might be interested.

Yaar Mila Thaa – As in keeping with the mood of the album, one more fast and foot tapping number.  Madhushree and Udit Narayan (whose voices are synthesized on and off through the song) plod through this song that borders on dull and uninteresting.

Would have loved to have a really great album of ARR’s to review so close on his heels of winning the Oscar………..but this unfortunately is not a brilliant album and pales in comparison to his Jodha Akbar and Delhi 6, though it has a couple of songs that seem to shine through somehow.  However, there is absolutely no doubting or denying Rahman’s genius in putting together some amazing background scores – the unique and varying range of instruments he employs to make the orchestration distinctive and appealing…  Blue is an offering that might bring a few die-hard Rahman fans moments of listening pleasure but for this reviewer, an album that may soon be forgotten!
