Film Review - The Other End Of The Line

10/27/2008

Bored of the traditional boy meets girl storyline? Here is one for you with a global twist. In ‘The Other End of the Line, an all American man meets a girl from India over a phone line and what do you have – an East meets West spicy and sweet romance !

Beautiful and dreamy eyed India based Shriya Saran, earns her living as a call center operator working for a credit card company based in the US but operating out of Mumbai, India. She is in every way the quintessential modern girl, completely in tune with her new identity by adopting an American accent and learning the nuances of American life from its celebrities to its food as part of her job.

Enter ambitious New York based Jesse Metcalfe who is trying to land a major account for his ad company and has a super accomplished beautiful blonde as his girlfriend. He has just been told by the card company operator Shriya that someone has been making purchases on his card and therefore she needs to talk to him to confirm those payments.

A phone line across oceans seems an unlikely start to romance but that is what exactly happens in the course of the  film. Charmed by their conversations they seem destined to cross paths and are inadvertently drawn to each other. On an impulse he invites her to meet him at San Francisco assuming she is working there. An equal flight of fancy makes her jump on a flight to America leaving her promised fiancé and parents back at home in a dither.

Do the lovers meet? Watch this love story unfold breaking all conventional rules and regional boundaries. Shriya’s family intervene in comedic ways to stop her from getting involved while Metcalfe parents are totally missing from the picture. Fake phone accents, celebrity information and food descriptions of the big Wendy burger all add up to the fun facts of how the call centers are trained in India. Playful and downright funny, the movie wills you to suspend disbelief, while raising thoughtful issues about globalization and cultural differences. A delightful cross county romp from Mumbai to San Francisco

The aces in the film include some stunning cinematography of Mumbai and San Francisco. To be released nationwide on October 31, the film is the first in a five-year co-production deal between Amritraj's U.S.-based Hyde Park Entertainment and India's powerhouse studio Reliance.  Amritraj's previous Hollywood comedies have included "Bringing Down the House" starring Steve Martin and Queen Latifah, and "Raising Helen" starring Kate Hudson.THE OTHER END OF THE LINE was shot in Mumbai and San Francisco and also stars Anupam Kher.
