The music of Thodi Life Thoda Magic was released by Amitabh Bachchan last month at a star studded ceremony.  The Jackie Shroff starrer has already been in the news amidst controversy and accusations that the title of the forthcoming production of Yash Raj Films Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic was too close and similar to this one!

The music of Thodi Life Thoda Magic is by Vinay Tiwari – formerly of the Music Director team of Nikhil -Vinay who have now gone their separate ways.  As a team they composed music for Kaun Hai Jo Sapna Mein Aaya, Tum Bin, Zameer, Hum Tumhare hain sanam amongst many others.  Vinay, who recently in an interview with musicindiaonline.com has blasted most of the current talent shows as being farces (source: http://www.musicindiaonline.com/n/i/top_stories/2316/) has a couple of films under his own belt including Strangers.  The lyrics are by Irshad Kamil (who has penned lyrics for movies like Chameli, Shabd and Jab we met), Aanand Rai (also the director of the film) and Sunil Jogi (who is also a young and talented Haasya Kavi, film lyricist and writer)

Maana Ye Aaj Humne

The song starts off with great promise and maintains a certain grace throughout– the very elaborate violin support and waltz beat take you back to the Shankar-Jaikishan era – and also brings to mind some of Kishore’s songs of the same genre.  Shaan’s voice is rich and mature – while Vijay comes through competent and confident.  Swati, the female singer is a little raw and rough around the edges (shades of Sharda who sang for SJ) but nevertheless just manages to deliver the goods.

Thoda saa Gum ho

A song all about life and its magic and Sonu in his inimitable style manages to carry of this song with aplomb. The rhythm and music for this song are enjoyable and like most of the other tracks, reminiscent of the eighties and nineties. There are two more versions of this song which seems to be like the title track of the film.  The remix version sounds a little hurried and uninspired and I am not sure if it will really be that popular as a dance number.  The slow version just drags on with Sonu sounding very despondent and sad as he laments on about life and though well sung is just too long – goes on for about 9 minutes!

Tune Kahi aur Maine Maani.

Kailash Kher sweeps through the song with his gifted voice and earthy rendition. The melancholic mood for this song is set by Kher’s introductory mukhda and humming. While Kher’s range is impressive and his rendition passion packed, they seem to be the only redeeming features of this very mediocre and monotonous song!  The remix version of the song seems pointless and the orchestration seems contrived and out of sync with the melody and mood of the song.

Yeh Mast Hava Jo

Sung by Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam and Vinay.  –Just about above average melody that vaguely brings to mind some of RDB’s numbers in the late eighties and early nineties.  The tune is lilting enough and Shreya Ghoshal dominates with her teasing and charming vocals. Vinay who joins the song in the second anthara sounds promising but is soon eclipsed by Sonu who joins the company and croons through the remainder of the song with his ever so gentle and tender tones!  The background score has some neat guitar, mandolin, violin, sax and dholak work.

Zindagi Zindagi Kaisi Hai Tu

Sung by Saahil and Suhas, this track seems to be the theme song of the film and is very short and very run of the mill and maybe a recurring motif in the film.

It is disappointing that the life and magic in the album are very minimal and don’t really inspire repeated listening.  Some of the songs might become hits but only temporarily and will be easily forgotten as other albums with more life and magic come along!
