2008 NSF MA Regional Education Bees

Press Release
04/24/2008

The North South Foundation (NSF) is a non-profit, tax-exempt and voluntary organization that awards merit scholarships to exceptionally qualified needy students in India, entering colleges, regardless of religion, gender, caste or geographic origin.  In addition, NSF organizes activities such as spelling, math, vocabulary and geography contests for children of Indian origin living in USA.

The 8th MA regional educational contests of the North South Foundation were held on April 5 and 6 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge and April 12 and 13 at Fitchburg State College (FSC).

Everyone who participated in an NSF bee is a winner since they learn something new every time they participate.  NSF contests are a journey.  Congrats to everyone who embarked and/or continued on this journey this April.

Over 180 (MIT) and 250 (FSC) contestants registered for Spelling, Vocabulary, Math, Geography and Essay Writing contests, combined.

NSF would like to acknowledge the efforts of this year’s Regional Coordinators:
Shitanshu Shekhar and Murali Sethumadhavan.  These events were made possible by Dr. Anu Annaswamy at MIT and Dr. Meledath Govindan at FSC.

Total contestants ~ 430
Funds raised from registration towards NSF-INDIA scholarships ~ $9,000.

Chief guests - Sudipta Singh, Partha Ghosh, Dilip Mathur and Dr. Anil Saigal talked to the children on the different days and gave away the medals.

As a new initiative the MA chapter also hosted a food and school supplies drive and will be donating them good to local pantries and school projects.

MA chapter is hosting the Finals at MIT during labor day weekend.  If you are interested in volunteering for this event please send an email to Sangeeta Roy - hellosangeeta@yahoo.com.
