The South Asian Voice

Ranjani Saigal

With all the excitement about the presidential contests where every candidate is “listening to our voice so they can find theirs” South Asians have an opportunity to perhaps have our voice heard. If we could have the candidates over to our house for dinner like so many people seem to have done in New Hampshire, what would we ask them?

Here are some of the issues that affect many South Asians directly

1) Healthcare for parents who may not be citizens

2) Visitor health insurance

3) Tuition benefits for children of middle income parents to attend college

4) Lower credit-card processing fee for small businesses (like grocery stores)

5) Permission to work on an H4 visa so that spouses of H1 visa holders do not feel vulnerable due to lack of economic independence.  (Australian citizens have been awarded this benefit with an E1 Visa)

6) Speedy green card processing for spouses of Green-card holders and Citizens

7) An interim visa that allows spouses of Green-card holders and citizens to work while their green-card is being processed

8) Easier processing of Visitor Visa for artists. Shows often get cancelled at a very late stage due to visa problems.

9) Special visa provision for abused spouses that allows them to stay in the country while they may go through marriage counseling.

10)The need for effective translation and interpretation services ?

11) What happens to the Nuclear Deal ?

12)Dealing with  Hate crimes and discrimination?

10) Recognition of Diwali as a National Holiday!

What do you see as your issue? Lokvani promises to put the list together and send it to all campaigns to make sure our voice is heard!
