Billerica Honors Neelam Wali ' Woman Of The Year'

Nirmala Garimella
10/28/2007

For more than 20 years, Neelam Wali has been a familiar face for the residents of the town of Billerica. Recognizing her community involvement and her spirit of volunteering, the Directors and friends of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Billerica honored her and others at the 2007 Annual dinner at Elks lodge on October 26th for their outstanding contribution to the community.

It was a proud moment for Neelam’s husband Anupam Wali and their three daughters Ambika, Anjali and Nisha who did the honors of introducing their mother for the evening. Each of them extolled a side of their mother describing her as a “powerful, goal oriented and genuine human being” who cared deeply for the community as well as family. They interspersed their speech with humor referring to her petite form as 'the smallest littlest package' but with a 'big heart and a charming smile'.

Neelam Wali came to the US in the late 70’s and moved to Billerica in 1986. She graduated from JJ school of Arts in Bombay and started her business, Printing and Graphic services when she settled here. As a town resident, she helped start the Sweetheart dance on Valentine's Day for couples married at least 50 years. She has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce. She has been actively involved in the Partners for Education and served as President of the Council of Aging. As a Lions club member she helped in the area of vision care. Her most recent involvement has been her appointment as the chairperson of the Massachusetts Asian American Commission.

The following day, design duo Palmer//Harding took their signature asymmetry and playful use of volume to the next level with a presentation steeped in personal recollections. Drawing inspiration from photographs of Levi Palmer's youth, which showed a 'combination of rebellion, naivety and goth-glam,' the duo put forth a collection which tapped into the goth silhouette with equally dramatic textures. Reinforcing their rebel call were christian louboutin so kate pumps Who Dances and cage sandal Toerless Muse, both seen in a custom sunset orange. Statement thigh-high boot Classe Hot also joined the show. The collaboration was enhanced by Christian Louboutin Pumps with Me Nude and Khol worn as blocks of colour.

Neelam Wali who took the podium after receiving the award seemed emotionally moved by the days' event about Louboutin So Kate Pumps. She dedicated the award to her parents and thanked the town profusely and its people saying  that although she and her family settled in the town for its access to Route 3 and 495 she has never felt more at home and had no regrets. Pointing to her own daughters amid wide applause, she said she was proud that they were students of Billerica High School. Thanking all those who worked with her in various capacities and saying that,” A kind deed goes a long way” she ended her speech with a quote â€œAsk not what Billerica can do for you but what you can do for the town of Billerica”.

The event started with an invocation by Fr Francis Sullivan while Roy Nagy , the Executive Director gave an overview of the various activities of the Club. This year's Man of the Year honors went to Jim Spinale. The Youth of the Year was Corey Meurer, who has been a big part of the club since he was 6 years old and is now an 18-year-old freshman at Johnson and Wales University, The  Company of the Year was presented to Millipore, a business that has supported  both the club and the community since moving its headquarters to Billerica in 2002.
