The theme for this year’s event was building a competitive edge through innovation and global collaboration. According to a 2006 IBM study on global CEOs, a majority of the respondents said they are planning to drive innovation primarily through business partner and customer collaboration as key sources for new ideas. Aimee Munsell, Director of Innovation, IBM examined issues addressed in this study in a leading panel titled Innovation and Collaborate: Global Stepping Stones. In another related panel on Global Innovation: What’s Next famous inventor Dean Kamen stressed the need for global innovation starting with a strong foundation in education. He also noted that the U.S. shouldn’t necessarily be threatened by the growth in other parts of the world; rather it should embrace this promising trend and be part of a happier and stronger global society.

“Events like TiECON East 2007 impacts the local and global landscape at various levels of entrepreneurship,” said Al Kapoor, Chair, TIECON East 2007. “Whether an entrepreneur is located in Bangalore or Boston is not a concern today but whether the person can collaborate and innovate effectively is the real deal. TiECON East is unique because it strives to cater to this larger pervasive issue rather than focusing on narrower niches. Because of this reason, people from all areas and interests attended the event and each took something meaningful away.”

All panels in the leading tracks of technology, health and enterprise had the underlying theme of innovation and collaboration and leading technology and business trends were analyzed from this perspective. Don Dodge, Director of Business Development, Microsoft Emerging Business Team and Douglas Merrill, VP of Engineering, Google discussed challenges and opportunities of Web 2.0. Despite an ever-increasing number of e-commerce Web sites and online social networks, experts at TiECON including Lycos founder Bob Davis weren’t worried about the Web 2.0 bubble. According to Davis, there is still plenty of room for start-ups to get into the action.

The Emerging Technologies panel examined how innovative technologies not only enable the creation of new products and services, but they can also disrupt existing markets and create new ones. Panelist Amir Alexander Hasson, Founder, United Villages Inc. described how his technology wirelessly connects remote villages in rural India to the Internet using Wi-Fi.

“Putting together an extraordinary conference such as this takes discriminating taste, tenacity and relentless drive, particularly on part of the volunteers. I salute their efforts and success”. said Geetha Ramamurthy, Executive Director, TiE-Boston. “We bring leaders from different parts of the country and the world here in Boston for our emerging leaders to meet with them, to be inspired, to innovate be it for social impact or to build the next big east coast company. We ensure that avenues for thought leadership are always available at TiECON East.”

Now in its ninth year, the event has grown significantly in size and influence since its inception. The networking and mentorship opportunities that TiECON East fosters have channeled significant support from local business leaders. Raj Sharma, Boston-based, Merrill Lynch Private Wealth Advisor and his colleagues at Merrill Lynch were platinum sponsors of TiECON East 2007. “The reason my colleagues at Merrill Lynch and I are so devoted to TiECON East is because it facilitates a strong mentoring relationship between successful entrepreneurs, corporate executives and the next generation of entrepreneurs. This relationship translates into innovative business models, strong mentorship and economic success,” Sharma said.
