04/18/2007

From the spectacular strings of the Mohan Veena by Vishwa Mohan Bhatt to the soulful music of Sanjay Abhyankar, from the stirring Sarod -Sitar Jugalbandi of Sugato Nag and Puspen Dey to the dazzling duo violins of Ganesh Kumaresh, the Conference had something for every one, a  treat for all music lovers and music aficionados.

The three day festival attracted a community of 450 people, around 150 volunteers, gracious hosts, and a committee of dedicated and hard working team who put months of time and effort and legwork to make this a astounding success.

Organizers to this conference said they  specially designed it in such a manner so to come as close as possible to the goal of presenting classical music by including most of the major instruments and vocal styles of Indian classical music, including leading exponents from Carnatic and Hindustani traditions.

Featured artists include Ustad Rashid Khan (Vocal), Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Guitar/Mohan Veena), Ustad Shahid Parvez (Sitar), Shubhra Guha (Vocal), Pt. Satish Vyas (Santoor), Subhas Chandran and group (Percussion Ensemble), Sanjeev Abhyankar (Vocal), Ganesh-Kumaresh (Violin), Aparna Balaji (Vocal), Sugato Nag and Puspen Dey (Sarod-Sitar Jugalbandi), Anuradha Pal (Tabla), George Ruckert (Sarod), Nitin Mitta (Tabla), Sandipan Samajpati (Vocal), Ganga-Kaveri (A Hindustani-Carnatic flute jugalbandi), Music Triveni with Phil Kaplan, Suresh Mathur, K. V. S. Vinay, Shuchita Rao, Sven Larson and David Jamrog.

"The conference is structured along the lines of sangeet sammelans held in India. We have several concerts by leading muscians. But the concerts are short - lasting only for about an hour or hour and a half" said Pradeep Shukla who is part of the organizing committee. The musicians did a tremendous job of presenting a fine concert in a short period allocated to them.

Attendees came from all over the country . "I have rarely witnessed such an event in the US" said Nikhil Raghu an aspiring young Tabla player who is a high school junior in Detroit Michigan. "Despite APs and SATs looming in the horizon I decided not to miss the trip. I feel so blessed to be here"

The organization was a massive effort and included the work of several tireless volunteers. From hosting of musicians, publicity, travel, logistics and food there was so many details that needed to be attended to and the core group did an excellent job with the organization. Food was partly catered and partly donated by a team of dedicated music affecionadoes.

This is the second year for the conference and we eagerly look forward to another star studded event next year.
