Trust Established For Teaching Bhajan Singing

Hemendra Acharya
12/20/2006

Vitthal Bhakta, a well-known and popular singer in the metro-west area of Boston, MA recently inaugurated a unique trust. The trust named “Shree Deviben Bhakta Charitable Trust” is an educational trust about Bhajan Sangeet. The aim of the trust is “To promote education in Bhajan Sangeet and to support the teaching of proper bhajan singing techniques”.

Vitthal Bhakta established this trust in memory of his mother Deviben Bhakta, who loved to sing bhajans. Shree Deviben believed that Bhajans and Prayers are essential for attaining inner peace and tranquility. She sang bhajans everyday and made them an important part of her life. Vitthal Bhakta wishes to pass on Deviben’s message of “Peace through Bhajans” to future generations through the activities of this Trust.

Bhajans are an easy way for people to invoke thoughts of God, or to pray to God, because they are in musical form. Bhajans articulate many ideas in Hindu culture such as right and wrong, the power of God, human vulnerabilities, etc. Many of these concepts are easier to grasp or retain, when repeated in musical form, rather than in other literary forms. Bhajans and prayers have always been an important vehicle for people in India to cope with the stress of daily life, and to obtain inner peace and tranquility.

Funds for the “Shree Deviben Bhakta Charitable Trust” were raised at the inaugural function, where Vitthal Bhakta released two CDs with his rendition of popular bhajans. One CD included bhajans sung in Gujarati, while the second CD included bhajans sung in Hindi. The fund raising event, held at the India Society of Worcester building in Shrewsbury, MA was very well attended. Vitthal Bhakta has been singing bhajans in this area for many years, and people always enjoy listening to him. He also hopes that parents will translate bhajans on these CDs into English for their children, so that they too can understand the spiritual thoughts in these hymns, and make them an integral part of their daily life. A book with the same lyrics written in English is also included with each CD.

The “Shree Deviben Bhakta Charitable Trust” has been established to propagate these ideas about inner peace and tranquility through Bhajan Sangeet to the next generation. The Trust will support and pay for expenses such as renting classrooms to teach music, attending music schools for learning Bhajan Singing, and other activities that will support the goals of the Trust. A seven-member committee has been set up to evaluate all requests for support from this trust.

Further information about ““Shree Deviben Bhakta Charitable Trust” or purchase of these CDs can be obtained by contacting Vitthal Bhakta at (978) 368-0119 or through email at ramakabir@aol.com.
