Mission

The mission of Sahayta, a non-profit organization based in India, is to provide holistic (financial, emotional and social) support to people afflicted with cancer.

Our intention is to instill confidence, hope and courage in the minds of patients and their family members. Our EMBLEM indicates that we should reach out wherever help is needed and light the light of life.

History
Sahayta, which means help and support, was established in Chandigarh, India in 1997 by Neenu Tuli, after her sister was diagnosed with cancer. The necessity and utility of such an organization motivated her to light the lamp of hope, compassion and empathy in the lives of people suffering from cancer.
Starting with just 5000 rupees ($100), in nine years the annual budget has grown to 20 lakh rupees ($40,000). For the past few years Sahayta has been sponsoring chemotherapy for 75-100 patients every year. It is also funding the education of 70 children from cancer afflicted families.

Projects
Besides providing financial support, some of our other projects include organizing recreational therapy programs for children, holding rallies to create awareness of the disease, and a toy bank to help cheer the young patients. Please visit our website http://www.sahayta.org to find out more about these projects and how you can help.

Sahayta sponsored children

Prachi is a lovely girl of ten years who always made her parents proud. In spite of limited resources she excelled in studies and creative activities. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with ALL-B lineage in December, 2005. Her father is a factory worker and is unable to afford the treatment. Her mother is a housewife trying to put up a brave front by shuttling between home and the hospital.

Tragedy struck when two brothers were diagnosed with serious ailments. 8 year old Nitin was diagnosed with a malignant tumor on the left side of the spinal cord. His 6 year old brother was diagnosed with an infection of the kidney. Nitin has already undergone chemotherapy but now needs surgery. His father, a salesman in a chemist shop, is unable to afford the expensive treatment. The relatives deserted the family in their time of need. Schooling of both children has been discontinued.

Sahayta started sponsoring Prachi and Nitin’s treatment after being referred by their doctors.
