Renowned Indian Dancer Lakshmi Vishwanathan To Perform At PEM

Press Release
09/20/2006

Renowned Indian dancer Lakshmi Vishwanathan to perform at PEM

Poems of Love in Bharatanatyam, Classical Dance from South India

Dancer, choreographer, scholar, and author Lakshmi Vishwanathan is a virtuoso in the art of Bharatanatyam Abhinaya (mime), in which the dancer, similar to a painter or a sculptor, fills space with color, mood, and meaning. Vishwanathan uses classical Indian text and melodies to express emotions of love ranging from desire, anticipation, disappointment and euphoria to jealousy, dejection, and despair.

Vishwanathan's performance at the Peabody Essex Museum will present a range of compositions, namely Padams and Javalis, from the Devadasi (court dancer) repertoire. These compositions explore the myriad facets of romantic love from a woman’s point of view. Explanations in English will be provided.

A dancer, writer and connoisseur of the arts, Vishwanathan is also Vice-President of the Madras (Chennai) Music Academy. Her newspaper articles on dance and music are well-known. Vishwanathan teaches at the Mark Morris Dance Center in New York and was the only Asian artist invited to perform at the Jacob’s Pillow International Dance Festival in New York City in 2004. She is the author of biographies of the legendary singer M.S. Subbulakshmi and of the celebrated Devadasi Bangalore Nagaratnammal.

A reception with the artist follows the performance.
