Raja and Radha Reddy at PEM

The Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA, in collaboration with MITHAS (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Heritage of the Arts of South Asia), presents a Kuchipudi dance recital by recipients of the Padamshree and Padmabhushan awards, world-renowned dancers Raja and Radha Reddy, on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 7:30 pm in the Morse Auditorium, Peabody Essex Museum, East India Square, Salem, MA.

The classical dance form Kuchipudi-which derives its name from the village Kuchelapuram in South India, where it was nurtured by scholars and artists, makes use of both rhythmic footwork and sculpturesque body poses. Stylized mime combines with more realistic acting using hand gestures, facial expressions and, occasionally, dialogue.

Raja and Radha Reddy bring new dimension to Kuchipudi without sacrificing traditional poetry or dramatic sensibility. They will be performing at PEM with a nine-member ensemble.

A reception with the artists follows the performance.

For directions to the museum, please visit: www.pem.org/visit/hours.php

Tickets: Supporters $50, PEM and MITHAS members $25, nonmembers $30,students $20

Available at www.mithas.org or 978-745-9500 ext. 3011 (PEM registration line)
