Lekhoni, a Bengali creative writer’s group, in collaboration with Bhin Golardho, a literary group commemorated the poetry-month by hosting a Bengali poetry-reading event on 29th April, 2006 in Newton.  This memorable occasion was witnessed by an audience of thirty-five strong, while nineteen readers recited verses of their own composition and by eminent Bengali poets including Rabindranath Tagore, Nazrul Islam, Dwijendralal Roy, Samsur Rahaman, Subhash Mukhopadhay, Joy Goswami, Samsul Haque, Subodh Sarakar, Phanibhusan Acharya, Nabaneeta Debsen, Sunetra Ghatak and others.     

The event lasted for approximately two hours, during which the audience listened to the readings with captivated attention.  The event reached its pinnacle when Madhuri Ray, an octogenarian stood up to read from her own composition.  The readers included Maya De, Israd Saira Moon, Prantik Roy, Kaji Noorjahan, Alok De, Gouri Datta, Mustaphijur Rahaman Happy, Jayanta Dey, Bodiuzzaman Naseem, Rokea Jamar Eliza, Satyapriya Sarkar, Bipul Kamal, Rahul Ray, Madhuri Ray, Jasmine Phirdous, Sourav Mukherjee, Sajal Banerjee, Mehdi Imam, Sumita Basu, Sumit Nag, Somenath Basu, and Swapna Ray.  The event was emceed by Manisha Roy.

Lekhoni is planning to host an English poetry reading event in the month of August of this year.  This event will be directed particularly for our next generation.
