A planet has two moons. One moon rotates about the planet in 32 days while the other moon rotates in 44 days. If  both moons are full tonight, how long will it be before they are both full moons again?

My grandson is about as many days as my son is weeks, and my grandson is as many months as I am in years. My grandson, my son and I together are 140  years. Can you tell me my age in years?"

SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS ON 05/04/06

FOR CHILDREN

PROBLEM # 1
Divide $155 (in whole $ increments) into a number of bags so that I can ask for any amount between $1 and $155, and you can give me the proper amount by giving me a certain number of these bags without opening them. What is the minimum number of bags you will require?

SOLUTION
8 bags each containing the following amounts: $1 2 4 8 16 32 64 28.

PROBLEM # 2
A group of four people has to cross a bridge. It is dark, and they have to light the path with a flashlight. No more than two people can cross the bridge simultaneously, and the group has only one flashlight. It takes different time for the people in the group to cross the bridge:

A crosses the bridge in 1 minute,
B crosses the bridge in 2 minutes,
C crosses the bridge in 5 minutes,
D crosses the bridge in 10 minutes.

How can the group cross the bridge in 17 minutes?

SOLUTION
A & B  cross the bridge:   2 minutes

A  returns back            :   1 minute

C &D cross the bridge: :   10 minutes

B returns back             :    2 minutes

A & B cross the bridge:     2 minutes
