Independance Day Celebrations - Bollywood Bhangra Style

08/24/2005

Young Indian Americans celebrated the 58th anniversary of India’s Independence by attending a Bollywood dance party at the Cosmopolitan Club in Boston’s financial district. Shailender Nagpal, the man behind the show is passionate about Indian culture and has worked actively to organize events in the past. He was instrumental in putting together a “Holi celebrations” and “NetSAP Bollywood theme party” earlier this year. Nagpal is a board member of NetSAP and works at Mathworks in Natick and lives in Watertown.

The event started at 9:00 in the evening, with more that 125 – 150 people joining in for the evening bash.  Rohit Midha of Malden stirred some enthusiastic response by teaching “bhangra” to a group of guests. DJ Bunty spinned  quality bhangra music, to the entertainment of everyone. The crowd revved up to music from the latest Bollywood hit Bunty and Babli to songs of  Punjabi MC There was no respite at the dance floor, as song after song relived memories of India and the crowd danced their way till 2:00 am!. Contests were held for the Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female. There was also a contest for the best Male and Female dancer.

Shailender Nagpal who moved to Boston from Seattle recently would like to enthuse more people into the Bhangra scene. " It is fun and lively and it a wonderful way for folks to get together and enjoy themselves", says Nagpal who has also been the producer of a TV show in Seattle. He hopes to bring together such a group with the help and support of the local community
