Ustad Rashid Khan

Rashid Huasain Khan, born in 1966, is perhaps the most convincing  proof of what miracles the revived Gurukul system can achieve. Under  the tutelage of Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan, the Sahaswan Gharana maestro,  in Sangeet Research Academy, Calcutta; Rashid has metamorphosed from a gawky, groaning child to an artiste of unbelievable maturity, vocal  prowess and artistry.

Music connoisseurs have been wonderstruck by the fine balance between
his technical virtuosity and his aesthetic creativity, as also by his sense of symmetry and logic in musical effects. His alap is imaginative,  his rhythmic play pulsating and the cascades of his powerful,  lightening, swift taans unimaginable until actually heard. His internalization of raga-bhav is uncanny. A notable achievement of  Ustad Rashid Khan is the infusion of an emotional content into his melodic elaboration.

"There is now at least one person in sight who is an assurance for the future of Indian vocal music", said Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, voicing a few years ago, the concern of connoisseurs of Hindustani vocal music whether its tradition of excellence would continue. It indeed has...  with Ustad Rashid Khan, the young maestro, one of the leading torch-bearers. "Today's greatest, a successor to the Bade Ghulam Ali and Amir Khan Khan generation" was how The Economic Times has eulogized Rashid. The Statesman has described him as " immensely gifted...affects first-time listeners with a jolt" after the magic of his voice began taking audiences by storm wherever he sang.
