Ranjani Saigal 10/08/2026 Indian Americans for Burlington hosted a vibrant Diwali Mela at Burlington Commons on October 4, bringing the colors, sounds, flavors, and traditions of India to the local community. Now approaching eight years since its inception, the event has become an opportunity to showcase India's rich cultural heritage and share it with the people of Burlington. Unlike the town's Diwali tree-lighting celebration, held on the actual day of Diwali, the Diwali Mela is a cultural showcase designed to give residents a taste of India's diverse traditions through performances, fashion, music, dance, and community activities. The festivities featured a colorful Indian fashion show, highlighting the beauty and variety of traditional Indian attire, alongside a range of entertainment celebrating India's artistic traditions. The powerful rhythms of Dhol Tasha brought infectious energy to the gathering, while Garba, the lively folk dance from Gujarat, added to the festive atmosphere and invited people to experience the joy of Indian dance. A special highlight was the participation of local high school students as emcees. Their enthusiasm and confidence helped lead the program, demonstrating how younger generations can play an active role in celebrating and sharing their cultural heritage. The Mela also featured vendors offering a variety of goods, giving visitors an opportunity to explore Indian products and support local businesses. Raffles added excitement to the event and encouraged community participation. For nearly eight years, Indian Americans for Burlington has helped bring India to Burlington through this annual cultural gathering. By creating a space where people of different backgrounds can experience Indian traditions firsthand, the Diwali Mela fosters cultural understanding, community connections, and a sense of belonging. Diwali is celebrated across India and around the world, with traditions varying by region and community. Through its performances, music, fashion, and festive activities, Burlington's Diwali Mela offers residents a glimpse into this rich diversity while celebrating the shared spirit of joy and togetherness that festivals bring. More than a festival gathering, the Diwali Mela reflects the contributions of Indian Americans to Burlington's cultural life and the value of celebrating traditions together. As the event continues its journey toward its eighth year, its mission remains clear: to bring India to Burlington and share its vibrant culture with the entire community.
