The Shivalaya Temple of Greater Boston celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi from September 13 to 16, bringing together devotees in an atmosphere of devotion, music, community service and festive spirit. The four-day celebration concluded on Wednesday, September 16, with Ganapati Visarjan, marking an emotional farewell to Lord Ganesha.

A special feature of this year's celebration was the enthusiastic participation of students from different universities, who came forward as volunteers and took the lead in organizing and coordinating various aspects of the entire program. From helping with arrangements and managing devotees to assisting with the procession and Prasadam service, the young volunteers worked with energy and dedication.

Their involvement brought a refreshing sense of enthusiasm to the temple. Nikunj Doshi played an important motivational role, encouraging the young volunteers and inspiring them to work together with dedication and a spirit of service. The sight of students taking responsibility for a major religious celebration demonstrated how India's cultural and spiritual traditions continue to connect with the younger generation.

The festivities began on Sunday, September 13, with the arrival of Ganapati Bappa. Devotees welcomed the beautifully decorated idol with Aarti and prayers before placing Bappa at the Mandapam. On Ganesh Chaturthi, Monday, the temple conducted the Sthapana/Pran Pratishtha Puja, followed by Ganesh Vandana, bhajans, Ganesh Chaturthi Katha, Aarti and offerings of Naivedyam and Modaks.

The following evening featured devotional bhajans and Ganesh Aarti, along with Chhappan Bhog and Maha Bhog, bringing devotees together in prayer and fellowship. Families and community members participated throughout the celebrations, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere at the temple.

A Devotional Farewell to Bappa

Wednesday brought the much-awaited yet emotional conclusion of the festivities. The evening began with Uttar Puja, followed by bhajans and Aarti. Devotees then joined the Ganapati Visarjan procession, carrying Bappa with devotion and chanting “Ganapati Bappa Morya!  Pudchya Varshi Lavkar Ya”

For devotees, Visarjan is not simply a farewell. It carries the deeper spiritual message of accepting the temporary nature of all things while keeping the Divine presence alive within the heart. After days of worshipping Ganesha at home and in the temple, devotees bid farewell with gratitude and the prayer that Bappa return the following year.

The successful celebration was made possible through the combined efforts of the temple leadership, sponsors, volunteers and devotees.

Temple President Vijay Sehli thanked everyone for their active participation and expressed his appreciation for the generous support of the sponsors and the selfless service of the volunteers. He particularly acknowledged the dedication of the young volunteers whose involvement added tremendous energy to the celebration. Vice President Sudarshan Sharma and Treasurer Subash Bansal helped manage the gathering and crowd movement and coordinated the distribution of Prasadam to devotees. Vikas Sehli meticulously moderated the programs and made announcements, keeping devotees informed about the day's activities and upcoming temple events.

As the procession moved forward with prayers, music and the familiar chants of “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Morya Re Bappa Morya Re” there was a sense of both celebration and emotion. The festival had brought people together not only in worship but also in service and community.

The young volunteers, in particular, demonstrated that when the next generation takes responsibility for cultural and religious traditions, those traditions gain new life.

As Bappa departed, devotees carried home a simple prayer:

“Ganapati Bappa Morya! Pudchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!”
O Lord Ganesha, return soon next year!
