Among the many offerings made to Lord Ganesha, Panchakhadya (also known as Panchakajjaya in Karnataka) is one of the most ancient and auspicious. The name means "a sacred mixture of five nourishing ingredients." It is simple to prepare, requires no cooking, and symbolizes the offering of the five elements (Pancha Mahabhutas) and the five senses to the Lord.

According to tradition, this wholesome preparation is believed to delight Lord Ganesha, who is fond of simple, satvic offerings made with devotion.

Ingredients

• 1 cup grated dry coconut (copra)
• ½ cup powdered Jaggery
• ¼ cup roasted sesame seeds
• ¼ cup roasted gram dal (Dalia/chutney dal), coarsely powdered
• 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts or chopped cashews
• 1 teaspoon cardamom powder
• 1 tablespoon ghee (optional)

Method

1. Dry roast the sesame seeds until they begin to crackle. Let them cool.
2. Coarsely grind the roasted gram dal.
3. In a large bowl, combine the grated dry coconut, Jaggery, sesame seeds, roasted gram dal, peanuts or cashews, and cardamom powder.
4. Mix everything thoroughly.
5. Add a spoon of warm ghee if desired for added aroma and richness.
6. Offer it to Lord Ganesha before serving it as Prasadam.

Each ingredient carries symbolic meaning:

• Dry coconut represents purity and selfless surrender.
• Jaggery symbolizes sweetness in speech and relationships.
• Sesame seeds signify longevity, protection, and auspiciousness.
• Roasted gram represents strength and nourishment.
• Cardamom adds fragrance, symbolizing purity of thoughts and intentions.

Just as these simple ingredients blend harmoniously into one offering, devotees pray that wisdom, compassion, humility, strength, and devotion may unite within their own lives.

Before offering the Naivedyam, chant:

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः।

or

एकदन्ताय विद्महे
वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि।
तन्नो दन्तिः प्रचोदयात्॥

Offer flowers, 21 blades of Durva grass, fruits, and Panchakhadya with sincere devotion, and conclude with the Ganesh Aarti.
