Ukadiche Modak is the most sacred offering (Naivedyam) made during Ganesh Chaturthi. According to tradition, Lord Ganesha is especially pleased by Modaks, which symbolize the sweetness of spiritual wisdom hidden within a pure heart.
Offering to Lord Ganesha
Traditionally, 21 Modaks are offered during Ganesh Chaturthi, as the number 21 is considered highly auspicious in Ganesha worship.
Before offering the Modaks, chant:
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः।
or
वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥
Offer the Modaks with devotion, flowers, Durva grass, and fruits, and perform the Aarti before distributing the Prasadam among family and friends.

Ingredients
For the Filling (Pooranam)
- 2 cups freshly grated coconut
- 1½ cups grated Jaggery
- 1 tsp cardamom powder
- 1 tbsp. poppy seeds (optional)
- 1 tbsp. chopped cashews
- 1 tbsp. raisins
- 1 tsp ghee
For the Rice Dough (Ukad)
- 2 cups rice flour
- 2½ cups water
- 1 tsp ghee
- ¼ tsp salt
Step 1: Prepare the Filling
- Heat a pan and add 1 teaspoon ghee.
- Add grated coconut and Jaggery.
- Cook on medium heat until the Jaggery melts completely.
- Stir continuously until the mixture thickens and becomes slightly dry.
- Add cardamom powder, raisins, cashews, and poppy seeds.
- Mix well and allow the filling to cool.
|
Step 2: Prepare the Rice Dough
- Bring water, salt, and ghee to a rolling boil.
- Reduce the heat and add the rice flour gradually.
- Mix quickly until no dry flour remains.
- Cover and cook for 2–3 minutes.
- Transfer the dough to a plate.
- While still warm, knead it well until smooth and soft. Apply a little water or ghee if needed to prevent cracks.
|
Step 3: Shape the Modaks
- Divide the dough into small lemon-sized balls.
- Grease your palms lightly with ghee.
- Flatten each ball into a thin cup.
- Place 1–2 teaspoons of the coconut-Jaggery filling in the center.
- Create pleats around the edges and gently bring them together at the top to form the classic Modak shape.
|
Step 4: Steam the Modaks
- Grease a steamer plate or line it with banana leaves.
- Arrange the Modaks without overcrowding.
- Steam for 10–12 minutes.
- When the outer covering turns glossy, the Modaks are ready.
- Brush lightly with ghee before offering them to Lord Ganesha.
|
Tips for Perfect Modaks
- Use freshly grated coconut for the best flavor.
- Knead the rice dough while it is still warm to make it smooth and pliable.
- Keep the dough covered with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
- If shaping by hand is difficult, use a Modak mould.
May Lord Ganesha bless your home with wisdom, prosperity, and happiness.
