Boston Shines in Tricolor as FIA New England Marks India’s 80th Independence Day with Historic 5th International India Day Parade

The spirit of shared values and enduring friendship between the United States and India came alive as the Foundation of Indian Americans (FIA) New England celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with a vibrant International India Day Parade and Freedom Festival for the fifth consecutive year in the historic Boston Harbor.

The celebration got significant boost by a special message from India, as FIA New England received an official letter of recognition and blessings from India’s Home Minister, honorable Shri Amit Shah.

A major highlight of the celebration was the illumination of the iconic Prudential Center in Indian tricolor for the first time, transforming the Boston skyline into a powerful symbol of the growing multilateral U.S.-India partnership.First CGI, Boston Raghuram S, DCG-Shruthi Purshottam, FIA President Abhishek Singh along with businessman Dev Patil and FIA Executive team did the lighting ceremony

The grand parade was kicked off by Chief Guest Shri Raghuram S., Consul General of India in Boston. Leading the procession as Grand Marshals were Ms. Maggie Lemay of the U.S. Navy and Indian Army Colonel Inderpreet Singh, alongside prominent community leaders Ram and Meetu Gupta.

Five Consecutive Years of India Day Proclamation

FIA New England President, Abhishek Singh, expressed deep gratitude to Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu for recognizing numerous contributions of the Indian-American community and for issuing official proclamation announcing August 15 to be observed as India Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, marking the fifth consecutive year of this special recognition.

The parade showcased the extraordinary diversity of the Indian-American community, featuring colorful floats representing the rich cultural heritage of India and the shared values of the United States and India. American Veterans’ band and Marathi Dhol-Tasha band added music, energy, and patriotic spirit to the parade.

From Boston Tea Party to India Street: A Shared History

One of the most meaningful elements of the parade was its journey through historic India Street, a location that recalls Boston’s early maritime trade connections with India. The historic area symbolizes the centuries-old movement of Indian tea and goods through Boston Harbor and provides a unique backdrop for celebrating the intertwined history of India and America. The historic Boston Harbor location carries special significance with the story of the Boston Tea Party, an event that became a defining moment in America’s struggle for independence. The India Day celebration highlighted how trade, people, ideas, and history have helped connect the two nations across centuries.

The India Day Parade in Boston Harbor and the India Day Proclamation by Massachusetts Governor demonstrates continued dedication of FIA New England President Abhishek Singh and his team, whose efforts have helped establish the India Day celebration in Boston Harbor area as a signature cultural event in the New England region.

The Freedom Festival brought together Indian-Americans from across New England, elected officials, diplomats, veterans, community leaders, and friends of India to celebrate not only India’s independence but also the enduring bonds between two of the world’s greatest democracies.

With the Indian tricolor lighting up the Prudential Center, the parade filling Boston’s streets with music and culture, and the historic India Street serving as a bridge between two nations’ stories of freedom, Boston once again became a stage for celebrating India’s heritage and powerful US-India friendship.
