Bhūmikā Arts Presents The Draupadi Phenomenon: A Groundbreaking Dance-Theatre Production Exploring Women's Dignity Through the Timeless Story of Draupadi

Bhūmikā Arts is proud to present The Draupadi Phenomenon, a powerful multimedia dance-theatre production conceived and choreographed by internationally acclaimed Odissi exponent Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya, on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the LCA Performing Arts Center in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Blending the classical traditions of Odissi and Mayurbhanj Chhau with cinematic visuals, immersive storytelling, and contemporary theatrical design, The Draupadi Phenomenon transforms one of the most compelling episodes of the Mahabharata into a deeply relevant reflection on women's dignity, justice, equality, and resilience. The production combines dance, theatre, music, and visual projection into an experience that is artistically sophisticated and broadly accessible.

At the heart of the production is Draupadi—not simply as a mythological heroine, but as the enduring voice of every woman who has faced injustice, silence, and oppression. Through powerful choreography and evocative imagery, the production asks a timeless question: Has the time not come for every woman to live with honor, dignity, and self-respect?

"This is not simply a retelling of an ancient epic," says Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya. "Draupadi's story continues to echo in today's world. Through dance, we hope to inspire reflection, dialogue, and a renewed commitment to human dignity."

The original music score has been designed by Grammy-nominated santoor maestro Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya, with musical contributions from Grammy Award-winning slide guitarist Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, creating an emotionally rich soundscape that enhances the production's dramatic storytelling.

Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya has spent more than four decades redefining the possibilities of Odissi through innovative choreography and compelling theatrical works. Her performances have captivated audiences at prestigious venues around the world, earning international acclaim for both artistic excellence and creative vision.

Presented by Bhūmikā Arts, the Massachusetts-based nonprofit dedicated to educating, informing, and inspiring communities through transformative arts, this performance also marks an important collaboration between artists from across the United States and India.

The production has received widespread critical acclaim, with praise from The New York Times, The Times of India, India Today, Hindustan Times, and Narthaki.com for its compelling artistic vision and contemporary message.
