Tradition, Grace and Devotion Illuminate Saahithi and Anvitha Kura's Arangetram

The 2026 Arangetram season for Lasya School of Dance opened on a radiant note with the Bharatanatyam Arangetram of sisters Saahithi Kura and Anvitha Kura, disciples of Guru Smt. Sapna Krishnan. Presented on June 27 at Medway High School Auditorium, the evening was a vibrant celebration of tradition, devotion, sisterhood, expressive depth and the enduring beauty of Bharatanatyam.

From the moment the sisters entered the stage, Saahithi and Anvitha brought with them an immense sense of joy, confidence, and enthusiasm. Their graceful stage presence, vibrant costumes, traditional jewelry, expressive makeup, and bright smiles added color and grandeur to the evening. As sisters sharing this milestone together, their chemistry was natural and heartfelt, making the recital not only an elegant presentation but also a touching celebration of a shared journey.

The program began with Pushpanjali, followed by Ganesha Stuthi, setting a devotional and auspicious tone. The dancers offered their prayers with poise and sincerity, invoking divine blessings before beginning the margam. Their opening itself reflected the discipline and confidence of years of training under Guru Sapna Krishnan.

The repertoire then moved through a beautiful range of moods and stories. Swagatham Krishna, performed by Saahithi, brought out the playful charm and sweetness of Lord Krishna. The piece beautifully evoked the spirit of welcoming Krishna into our homes and hearts, much like the festive traditions of Krishna Janmashtami with tulsi leaves, rangoli, tiny baby footprints, butter, sweets, and joyous celebration. Saahithi's performance was soulful, warm, and graceful, bringing devotion and sweetness to the stage.

In Deva Devam Bhaje, Anvitha portrayed the majesty and compassion of Lord Rama, the embodiment of righteousness, courage, and dharma. Her expressive abhinaya and graceful movements conveyed the depth of the composition beautifully. The brief demonstration before the piece helped the audience appreciate the nuances of storytelling, while the vocal chorus by Madhumitha and Nilanjana added depth and harmony to the presentation.

The centerpiece of the evening was the Varnam, Maathe Malayadwaja, in praise of Goddess Meenakshi. As the crowning piece of the Bharatanatyam repertoire, the Varnam demanded stamina, precision, emotional depth and maturity. Saahithi and Anvitha rose to the occasion with remarkable energy and confidence. They portrayed the many facets of Goddess Meenakshi, the compassionate mother, the patron of the arts, and the fierce protector with strength and command. Sapnaji's choreography was bold and powerful, especially in the electrifying portions inspired by Aigiri Nandini, which became a true feast for the audience. The dancers' synchronization, expressive storytelling, and commanding stage presence made the Varnam one of the most memorable highlights of the evening.

After intermission, the second half opened with Shivashtakam, a powerful invocation to Lord Shiva. Through dynamic jathis, moments of stillness, and dramatic expression, Saahithi and Anvitha brought alive the many dimensions of Shiva, the ascetic, the cosmic dancer, the compassionate protector, and the force of transformation. The choreography beautifully balanced power and serenity, allowing the audience to experience the spiritual depth of the hymn through movement.

The Hanuman Keerthanam in Ragam Vasantha brought devotional energy to the stage, celebrating Hanuman's courage, humility, and unwavering service to Lord Rama. Saahithi captured both the valor and devotion of Hanuman with sincerity and strength. Anvitha then returned with Tiro Tiro Javarala, a lively and charming composition on Goddess Alamelumanga. The piece was delightful, graceful and peppy, bringing a beautiful change of mood. Through playful expressions and elegant movement, Anvitha brought out the youthful charm, divine beauty, and graceful confidence of Alamelumanga.

The concluding Thillana in Ragam Bahar was a joyous finale. With sparkling footwork, rhythmic clarity and vibrant energy, Saahithi and Anvitha ended the margam on a celebratory note. The following Mangalam offered a fitting close, as the dancers paid their gratitude to the Almighty, their Guru, the musicians, their family and the audience.

One of the strongest pillars of the evening was the exceptional live orchestra. Guru Smt. Sapna Krishnan led the nattuvangam with authority and precision, guiding the dancers through every rhythmic passage. "Sangeeta Ratna" Sri E. P. Sudev Warrier brought each composition to life with his soulful voice. Sri Nagarajan Shanmugalingam provided the rhythmic heartbeat of the Arangetram through his masterful mridangam accompaniment. Sri Ramani Thiagarajan's flute added warmth, melody, and charm, while Sri Anandhu Lal's violin enriched the recital with emotional depth and grace. Together, the musicians did far more than accompany the dancers; they elevated the entire experience!

At the heart of the evening was the vision and choreographic brilliance of Guru Smt. Sapna Krishnan, Founder and Artistic Director of Lasya School of Dance. Her choreography was thoughtful, powerful and deeply rooted in tradition while still feeling fresh and engaging. She brought out the best in both dancers, allowing Saahithi and Anvitha to shine individually while also celebrating their natural connection as sisters.

This Arangetram also marked a proud milestone for Lasya School of Dance. With Saahithi and Anvitha completing their Arangetram, Guru Sapna Krishnan has now guided 80 students through this cherished milestone. This achievement is not merely a number; it is a testament to her dedication, mentorship, artistic excellence, and unwavering commitment to preserving and passing on the rich tradition of Bharatanatyam.

The beauty of the evening extended beyond the stage. The decor, lighting, makeup, costumes, photography, videography, sound and backstage coordination all came together to create an atmosphere that was festive, graceful, and divine. The tireless support of the Lasya community, including Nilanjana Nambiar and Madhumitha Nambiar, added warmth and strength to the Arangetram. Their guidance, coaching, technical support and artistic contributions continue to be an integral part of every Lasya Arangetram.

Congratulations to Saahithi Kura, Anvitha Kura, the Kura family, Guru Smt. Sapna Krishnan, and Lasya School of Dance on this beautiful milestone. The evening was a fitting beginning to the 2026 Arangetram season and a proud addition to the growing legacy of Lasya School of Dance.
