Activist Harriet Tubman As Special Advisor On Occasion Of Juneteenth

Press Release
06/25/2026

On occasion of Juneteenth, Global Peace Secretariat is honored to announce Ms. Rita Daniels, great-great-great-grandniece of the historic African American activist Harriet Tubman as Special Advisor and induct Ms. Daniels into its Women's Walk of Fame, Legacy Daughters section.

After escaping slavery, Harriett Tubman made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including her family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known collectively as the Underground Railway. During the American Civil War , she served as an armed scout  and spy for the Union Army. In her later years, Tubman was an activist in the movement for women's suffrage.Tubman's maternal grandmother, Modesty, arrived in the U.S. on a slave ship from Africa. In 1978, Tubman became the first African-American woman honored on a U.S. postage stamp.

There was one of two things I had a right to, Liberty or death: if I could not have one, I would have the other - for no man should take me alive; I should fight for my liberty as long as my strength lasted, and when the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me.”   Harriet Tubman

Ms. Rita Daniels developed a deep interest in Harriet Tubman’s life after learning from her mother that she is Tubman’s three-times great-grandniece. Inspired by Tubman’s courageous fight against enslavement, Rita is committed to ensuring that her legacy is honored, recognized, and remembered. She also co-authored the bestselling book:  Harriet Tubman - Military Scout and Tenacious Visionary. This book can be ordered on Amazon, Barnes and Noble,  as well as many other bookstores.

Rita seeks to honor Harriet Tubman’s legacy by re-establishing the Harriet Tubman Learning Center (HTLC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, through fundraising efforts for the school. HTLC provides literacy-focused programming that includes robotics, youth entrepreneurship, STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math—and cultural arts for underserved and underprivileged students. By addressing illiteracy in children and communities, Rita’s mission is to deliver meaningful educational solutions for struggling youth through HTLC.

In summary, Rita Daniels carries forward Harriet Tubman’s legacy through education, advocacy, and community service. As President and Founder of HTLC, she is dedicated to expanding literacy, STEM learning, cultural enrichment, and opportunity for underserved youth while ensuring Tubman’s enduring contributions remain visible and celebrated.

Among Ms. Daniels' accolades, she was honored for Women’s Day at the Capitol & Harriet Tubman Freedom Day in Philadelphia, PA.

" How amazing to have a descendant of Harriet Tubman, whose contributions were responsible for the beginning of the end of slavery, be part of Global Peace Secretariat's peace journey."..... Secretary General Kumu Gupta.
