Why This Rule of Third Sunday of June Was Chosen
- Scheduling Practicality: When the holiday was first celebrated in 1910, the date originally proposed was June 5 (the founder's father's birthday). It was pushed back to the third Sunday simply to give local pastors more time to prepare their sermons.
- Presidential Enactment: In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation establishing the third Sunday in June to celebrate fathers, a decree made official law in 1972 by President Richard Nixon
