Newton Celebrates Holi and International Women's Day with Color, Culture, and Community
On Sunday, March 8, Newton residents gathered at City Hall to celebrate the vibrant spring festival of Holi alongside International Women's Day. More than two hundred guests attended the lively event, which featured colorful cultural performances and an inspiring lineup of speakers, including Newton Mayor Marc Laredo, Representative Amy Mah Sangiolo, and Representative Greg Schwartz.
The program showcased a rich array of Indian classical dance traditions, from Bharatanatyam to Odissi to Kathak, performed with grace and energy. Among the performances were Sushmita Biswas and her students, Anandani Sekhar's students at Vidyanjali Dance School, a graduate of Neena Gulati's Triveni Dance School, and the students of Mona's Dance Academy. But the moment that truly brought the audience to its feet came when Mayor Laredo joined organizer Rakashi Chand and emcees Sarina, Sanjana, and Nayha for a Bollywood dance number that filled the hall with cheers and excitement.
The celebration also highlighted community voices and women's leadership. Radha Muthian spoke on behalf of "Newton Neighbors Helping Neighbors," Sharyn Roberts of the Newton League of Women Voters emphasized the importance of civic engagement and women's empowerment, and Dr. Ami Bhat Maniar, CIO at the American School of Cardiology, shared insights on South Asian heart health.
After the indoor program, attendees moved outside to the City Hall grounds to "play Holi"—joyfully tossing colorful powder on one another in a tradition symbolizing unity, equality, and the beauty of shared humanity. The unseasonably warm weather made the festivities even more enjoyable, and the bright colors looked especially striking against the lingering snow.
Join us next year to celebrate Holi and immerse yourself in color!
