Janani Swamy and Asha Nadipuram presented Aagamam as part of this year’s inaugural Natya Samaagam Dance Festival. Meaning “tradition,” Aagamam was a fitting title for a performance that paid tribute to their late guru, Guru Smt. Rajee Narayan. Their energy, synchronization, and grace sustained audience engagement throughout, but above all, it was their palpable joy in dancing that resonated most deeply.

The evening opened with an invocation to Saraswati—a piece traditionally used to commence their guru’s performance. Thoughtfully reimagined as a duet, the dancers complemented one another seamlessly as they evoked the goddess of knowledge and learning with clarity and poise.

The centerpiece of the evening was the varnam Anname Nee Davayai. Here, Janani and Asha adapted their guru’s original choreography into a duet format, while preserving its emotional and thematic integrity. The work explored prem bhakti—devotion through love—through the portrayal of two companions in search of Krishna. To deepen this narrative, they interwove the stories of Meerabai and Andal: one, a princess who defied societal expectations, and the other, a young girl devoted to Vishnu. Rather than presenting archetypal nayikas, the dancers foregrounded these women as autonomous seekers—figures of spiritual agency pursuing devotion on their own terms.

These narratives were brought to life through nuanced abhinaya, enriched by the incorporation of bhajans and poetry. The varnam culminated in the union of the gopi and Krishna through raas, offering both visual and emotional resolution. Alongside its expressive depth, the piece featured intricate and dynamic jathis. The duet format was used intentionally, allowing the dancers to divide rhythmic passages and traverse the stage with vitality, enhancing both spatial and kinetic complexity.

The performance concluded with a vibrant thillana followed by mangalam, where the dancers’ exuberance was unmistakable. The audience was left with a lasting impression of joy and fulfillment.
