Udavum Karangal  (literally Helping Hands) is a charitable organization in India that helps children, homeless, mentally disabled, AIDS patients, and others with financial support, counseling, and educational/vocational training.

Today a number of people are in misery due to the havoc created by the sea surge Tsunami. Thousands have lost their kith and kin, lost their home and belongings. A number of them are now out on the roads, homeless and not knowing what to do next.

Udavum Karangal of USA, along with its chapters in most major cities in the US, has rallied to spearhead the relief efforts to benefit the victims of tsunami aftermath. The local Indian community has been really touched by the devastation and felt compelled to do something to respond to this crisis.

Thanks to the generosity of the donors, the organization has already crossed the 100K milestone in the first two weeks of the tragedy! Governed by volunteers and supported by community donations, Udavum Karangal of USA, targets to raise about $200K in its initial effort to help the victims.

Sundar Balasuryan is the founder and board of director of the local chapter – Udavum Karangal of USA. Padmini Nathan, the President of the local chapter appeared recently on CNN’s Larry King Live show, to talk about the orphaned children of the tsunami destruction.  The Founder Secretary of Udavum Karangal in Chennai, Mr.Vidyaakar, was on air with Larry briefing his efforts to intervene in the rehabilitation process of the children by the Government.  He hopes to extend emotional and psychological help to the abandoned children and ultimately bring them into his organization in order for them to rebuild their lives.

Udavum Karangal has decided to adopt a small village near Cuddalore where about 500 families have lost everything. As normally cities get a major share of the relief measures, Udavum Karangal has decided to extend its help to these poor villagers. Much is needed to help the survivors and those affected by the tragedy to pick up their lives all over again. Udavum Karangal has already been actively involved in providing emergency help to these victims in the past few days. A majority of the affected are fishermen. In fact, they are second and third generation fishermen who have lived there for many years. The sea and the seashore are their sustenance.

Mr.Vidyaakar hopes that over the course of the next few weeks and months he will be able to help them with re-establishing their lives, which includes building housing for them, providing cooking utensils, clothing, or whatever might be necessary to get them started.  The president of the Fisherman’s Union has approached Mr.Vidyaakar requesting him to provide fishing nets for the affected families to help start their livelihood.

Udavum Karangal, an ISO certified welfare organization with more than two decades of experience in service and caring 2000 residents at present, has decided to involve itself in handling this crisis management.  The NGO intends to provide support and care at four levels. -

EMERGENCY RELIEF:
PROVIDING RESIDENTIAL CARE:
LONG TERM REHABILITATION SERVICES:
LIVELIHOOD REHABILITATION:

The organization humbly requests all friends to rise to the occasion and help generously to support the victims of nature's fury, to survive and to start a life afresh.

The waves of your support can certainly reshape the life of these broken people. Udavum Karangal invites the involvement of kindhearted persons, well wishers, Associations, Trusts, charities, organizations and all those who care to contribute meaningfully and extend support to the cause of the affected persons.
