Lakshmi–Kubera Puja: Invoking Divine Wealth And Prosperity On Deepavali
by Anand Tripathi Shastri

As the golden twilight of Diwali inclines and lamps glimmer at every doorstep, millions of devotees across the world prepare for the most sacred and joyous moment of the festival — the Lakshmi–Kubera Puja. This ritual, performed on the night of Amavasya in the month of Kartik, honors Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, and Lord Kubera, the celestial treasurer of the gods. Together, they represent divine abundance, balance, and purity — the very essence of Deepavali’s spiritual light. For 2025, Lakshmi Kuber Puja will be performed on Monday, October 20th, during Amrit Muhurat that falls between 08:28pm and 10:40pm coinciding with the main day of Diwali

The Significance of Lakshmi–Kubera Puja

Diwali is more than the festival of lights; it is a prayer for inner and outer prosperity and growth. While Goddess Lakshmi blesses devotees with wealth, grace, and harmony, Lord Kubera ensures its rightful management and preservation. Worshipping both together symbolizes not only the invitation of wealth but also the wisdom to use it for good deeds, charity, and dharma.

According to ancient scriptures, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the Kshira Sagara Manthan — the churning of the ocean of milk — on Diwali night. Her descent to Earth is believed to fill every pure-hearted devotee’s home with abundance and auspiciousness. Hence, on this night, lamps are lit, homes are decorated, and hearts are opened to divine light.

In many traditions, it is also said that Lord Kubera visited Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on this day and was granted guardianship over divine wealth. Thus, invoking him ensures both prosperity and protection from financial loss or misuse.

Preparation for the Puja

The sanctity of Lakshmi–Kubera Puja begins with purity and devotion.

  1. Clean and decorate the home: Sweep and cleanse every corner, particularly the puja room or altar. Draw a beautiful rangoli at the entrance and adorn it with lamps and flowers.
  2. Set up the altar: Place Murtis of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera on a clean red or yellow cloth. Keep a small idol or image of Lord Ganesha, as no puja begins without his blessings.
  3. Arrange the offerings: Prepare offerings (Naivedya) such as sweets, fruits, puffed rice, coins, flowers, incense, Kumkum, turmeric, and betel leaves. Keep gold or silver ornaments nearby to be blessed.
  4. Light the lamps: Light an oil lamp (diya) with ghee or sesame oil and a few incense sticks to purify the atmosphere.

Lakshmi–Kubera Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Ritual)

1. Ganesh Invocation: Begin the puja by invoking Lord Ganesha, remover of obstacles and herald of auspicious beginnings.

Mantra: “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” (Salutations to Lord Ganesha, who removes all obstacles.)

Offer flowers, rice grains, and sweets, praying for the success of the puja and harmony in the household.

2. Invocation of Goddess Lakshmi: Next, invite Mahalakshmi, the embodiment of divine light, fortune, and beauty. Sprinkle water and rice before her Murti while chanting her names with devotion.

Lakshmi Dhyana Mantra: “Om Mahalakshmyai Cha Vidyamahe Vishnu-Patnyai Cha Dhimahi,
Tanno Lakshmih Prachodayat.”
(May we meditate upon Mahalakshmi, consort of Lord Vishnu; may she inspire us toward purity and prosperity.)

Offer lotus flowers, sandal paste, turmeric, coins, and sweets. Light 11 or 21 lamps before her Murti.

Lakshmi Arati Mantra (short): “Om Shree Mahalakshmyai Namah.” Repeat this mantra while offering flowers or coins at her feet.

3. Worship of Lord Kubera: After invoking Lakshmi, offer prayers to Lord Kubera, the guardian of wealth and abundance. Place a small Kalash filled with water, adorned with mango leaves and a coconut, symbolizing Kubera’s treasury.

Kubera Mantra: “Om Yaksha-Rajaaya Vidyamahe, Alakaa-Dheesaya Dhimahi, Tanno Kubera Prachodayat.” (We meditate upon Lord Kubera, the king of yakshas; may he bless us with wealth and right conduct.) Offer, yellow flowers, jaggery, and puffed rice to Kubera, seeking not just riches but generosity and contentment.

4. Offering and Aarti: Perform Aarti to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera with deep devotion. Ring the bell gently while rotating the lamp clockwise in front of the deities. Chant the Lakshmi and Kubera Aarti.

Lakshmi Aarti (Opening Verse): “Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, Maiya Jai Lakshmi Mata, Tumko Nishdin Sevat, Har Vishnu Vidhata.”  Conclude the Aarti by distributing prasad to all family members and lighting additional lamps around the home and entrance.

5. Mantra for Prosperity and Peace: To complete the puja, sit quietly and chant this universal prosperity mantra: “Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah.” — 108 times (using a rosary or silently with focus). (This mantra invokes Goddess Lakshmi’s grace, purity, and wealth energy.)

Some also recite: Om Kuberaaya Namah.” — 21 times to honor Lord Kubera’s guardianship of abundance.

6. Closing Prayer: Offer your gratitude for blessings received and pray for the welfare of all beings. End the puja by bowing before the deities with folded hands and humility.

Prayer: “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niraamayaah; Sarve Bhadraani Pashyantu, Maa Kashchid-Dukh-Bhag-Bhavet.” (May all beings be happy, healthy, and free from sorrow.)

The Spiritual Essence of the Puja: The Lakshmi–Kubera Puja is not merely a ritual of wealth — it is a celebration of gratitude and ethical prosperity. Goddess Lakshmi represents purity of heart, while Lord Kubera embodies responsible stewardship. Together, they remind us that wealth earned through honesty and used for charity is the truest form of divine abundance.

Lighting each lamp on Diwali night symbolizes the awakening of inner wisdom. When wealth is accompanied by virtue, and prosperity is shared with compassion, then both Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera reside permanently in one’s home.

The Light of True Prosperity

As families gather for the Lakshmi–Kubera Puja on Deepavali night, let the fragrance of incense and the glow of lamps carry a deeper message — that real wealth lies in purity, peace, and generosity. May the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi fill every heart with serenity, and may Lord Kubera guard all homes with lasting prosperity. When the final diya burns in the quiet night, may it light not just your home but your path — toward health, happiness, and spiritual fulfillment.
