Rice Keer For Pitru Paksha Offering
by Geetha Patil and Madhumati Tyagi

During Pitru Paksha, the food prepared is sattvic, that is pure, simple, and free of onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian items. The dishes are made with respect and simplicity to honor ancestors, as it is believed the offerings provide peace and spiritual nourishment to the departed souls.

Kheer

This creamy sweet Rice Keer/pudding is a staple offering during Pitru Paksha.

Text Box: Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup rice
  • 1 liter milk
  • 70 grams sugar
  • Saffron (optional)
  • Crushed cardamom
  • Chopped almonds

Method

  1. Wash the rice thoroughly. In a heavy-bottomed pot, combine the rice, milk, and saffron (if using).
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the rice is cooked and the milk has thickened and reduced.
  3. Add the sugar and crushed cardamom, and continue to cook for another 4-5 minutes until the sugar dissolves completely.
  4. Garnish the kheer with chopped almonds and serve it for offering.

OR.

You can make plane rice first. In the heavy bottom pan, boil the milk and do not let it form a creamy layer on the top. Keep stirring in between.

Add saffron (if you wish to use it), add sugar into the milk and then, add cooked rice. Cook it for another 4 to 5 minutes and then garnish it with chopped almonds and serve it for offering.
