Press Release 08/28/2025 Kumu Gupta’s song “Om Shanti” (Acapella style) is an entry for the Recording Academy’s Harry Belafonte Best Social Change Award 2026. The song is about global upheaval in places like Gaza, India and Bangladesh and call for global peace. Miss Gupta launched her initiative Global Peace Secretariat in 2022 and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for over 2 decades of volunteer work in women’s and children’s rights and global peace. This is the 2nd year Kumu’s song is an entry for the Best Song For Social Change, the last year being on the theme of Domestic Violence. The Harry Belafonte Best Song For Social Change Award (formerly known as the Best Song For Social Change Award from 2022-2024) is a CEO’s Merit Award (Recategorized from Special Merit Award to CEO’s Merit Award in 2024) established by the Recording Academy’s National Trustees in 2022 to honor songwriter(s) of message-driven music that speaks to the social issues of our time and has demonstrated and inspired positive global impact. Recipient(s) are selected annually by a committee composed of a community of peers dedicated to artistic expression, the craft of songwriting and the power of songs to effect social change. Named in honor of the late entertainment icon Harry Belafonte, who was a powerful voice for social justice throughout his illustrious career, this award recognizes exceptional contributions to music and social advocacy.. The inaugural Best Song For Social Change Award (2022) for song “Baraye” was presented by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the Grammy Awards Program.
