Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya falls on Vaishakh Shuklapaksh Tritiya, the third day of the bright phase of the moon in the month of Vaishakh. 'Akshaya' means something that lasts forever, that never decreases. In this sense it means prosperity, happiness, success. On this day, performing acts of Bhakti (devotion) and daanam or daan (giving) will bring boundless joy and prosperity.
Daanam in the Hindu tradition is not charity, as is known in the Western tradition. It refers to the act of giving selflessly, without any expectation of return. One gives the best of what one has, not for any expectation of a reward like a tax break or a name for oneself. Daan thus given is a way to earn punya (merit) in this life, and as a means to moksha (liberation or enlightenment).
Many auspicious occasions are associated with this day. On this day, Bhagwan Krishna visited Draupadi and gave her the Akshaya Patra, the never-ending pot that always produced food. During their exile in the forest, the Pandavas found it hard to find food. Yudhishthir prayed to Surya, the Sun God, who, pleased by his devotion, gave him the Akshaya Patra, a pot that would never be empty.
There are several other events associated with this day, which makes it a very pious day.
This day is also the birth of Parashuram, the sixth avatar of Sri Vishnu. The day is also known as Parashuram Jayanti. Ved Vyas also started reciting the Mahabharat to Bhagwan Ganesh on this day. River Ganga descended to Earth on this day. Another event linked to the day is
Sudama's visit to his childhood friend Krishna in
Dwarka.
Kubera is believed to have been appointed the Deva of Wealth on this auspicious day.
