The largest South Asian music event at Berklee is happening this Sunday, April 20th at Brighton Music Hall at 7:00 PM. The South Asian Scholar Association (SASA) presents their Coke Studio Tribute: Mehfil. Entirely student led, this show promises a night of fusion and frivolity for lifelong fans of South Asian music and new listeners alike.
SASA was founded in 2021 under Berklee India Exchange to serve as a launch pad for South Asian students and their allies to celebrate and innovate. They hit the ground running and have never stopped. Mehfil is their most enterprising project to date - funded entirely by the community who believe in SASA's work and love the music they make.
Current SASA President Deeptha Ganesh and gives us a peek into the practice room ahead of the big night.
"Over the past three months, nearly 50 SASA members have been working tirelessly to create Mehfil, a production that truly represents who we are as a collective," Ganesh shares. "Our production crew, arrangers team, board members, and performers have dedicated countless hours behind the scenes to bring this vision to life. Mehfil is our most ambitious endeavor yet, and our goal is to expand our reach beyond the Berklee community."
So what makes Mehfil an event you absolutely shouldn't miss?
"Mehfil is more than just a show—it's a celebration of the beauty found in diversity and the power of representation. Featuring songs in eight different languages and blending traditional South Asian folk melodies with contemporary instrumentation, Mehfil aims to highlight the rich tapestry of musical traditions that define where we come from."
