“Want More?” Behind The Temptations Concert

Bharat Chari
10/05/2004

“Do you guys want more?” asks Sharukh Khan to the 13,000 plus concert goers that attended last Saturday night’s sold-out Temptations concert in Atlantic City. More is what everyone got. The three-hour plus event was filled with non-stop energy and performances by Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, and Arjun Rampal.

This show was like no other. The performers gave everything they had. They danced, they sang, they did stand-up improv. The show was so action-packed that there was no time for an intermission. That’s right --- the stars did not take a break and the audience was entertained for the full three hours. The whole concert hall came to life and gyrated with the stars to favorite tunes from Chalte Chalte, Hum Tum, and Kal Ho Na Ho, to name a few.

Adding even more spice to the Bollywood favorites, Saif Ali Khan jumped on stage with a guitar to recreate a Western classic --- “Sweet Child of Mine” from Guns & Roses followed by several other Indian & Western hits. Saif showed the crowd that his talent extended beyond acting; he had other talents --- he could play the guitar and he played it well! Not to be outdone, Priyanka Chopra followed Saif Ali Khan on stage and showed us her talent went beyond acting as well. Priyanka can sing. She sings wonderfully and with a range that left the entire audience stunned. She started with Christina Aguleria’s “Genie in a Bottle” and then easily switched to sing some Hindi ballads.

Each of the stars came on stage and performed, individually and together as an ensemble. They gave it their all --- so much so that you could actually feel the passion and hard work the cast put in. This translated into a high level of electrifying energy that surrounded the crowd. The audience roared. The high was like none seen before at a Bollywood show. In a follow up interview, Rani Mukerji pointed out, “there is never a feeling of a full stop…there is always a feeling of wanting more”. It is this drive that motivated these artists to deliver a topnotch performance.

The star of the evening was most definitely Sharukh Khan. Whether dancing and entertaining with his co-stars or mysteriously appearing amidst the audience on the floor, Sharukh had the whole crowd mesmerized. Backstage, he was focused on the task at hand --- getting ready for the next scene, changing into one of the twenty-plus outfits, motivating his troupe of entertainers….Onstage, he was as lively as could be, moving, jumping, dancing. He won the hearts of the audience as he started to call upon random people up on to the stage. A woman came to tears as she realized she was on stage with Sharukh Khan; a teenage boy was brought on stage and Sharukh took him through ‘Acting 101’ right then and there…. Sharukh’s light shone the brightest, however, in the last half hour of the show as he reprised some of his most recent roles, including the hopeful, dying man in Kal Ho Na Ho and the struggling husband in Chalte Chalte. As he re-enacted scenes from these movies, Preety Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, and Priyanka Chopra joined him. In moments, the audience was transported to the touching scenes of the movies.

So when Sharukh asked the crowd “Do you want more?” --- they were more than thrilled. The crowd that took over the famous boardwalk in Atlantic City left more than satisfied.

The Atlantic City show was the 15th stop of a 19 city worldwide tour that was put together by The Morani brothers and was promoted locally by Bharat Jotwani of Poojanka Entertainment and Victor Khubani.
