20th Annual Boston Bhangra - A Rocking Event

If you love dance or Bhangra, Boston was the place to be on December 2nd, 2024!  Boston Bhangra Inc. hosted their 20th annual Boston Bhangra Competition on Saturday, December 2nd   at the Strand Theatre in Boston. The event was packed with well over 1,300 people!

The competition level was very diverse and extremely competitive with teams from all over North America, according to organizers. Teams hailed from Vancouver Canada, Calgary, Canada, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan,  and Boston. 
Eleven  teams competed. Shan-E-Punjab from Vancouver, Canada won the event, followed by Chardi Jawani from California in second place and Rangla Punjab from Vancouver, Canada came in third.  Below is a description of the winning teams:

1st Place: Shan-E-Punjab
Shan - E - Punjab Arts Club was founded in 2008 by a group of passionate bhangra and giddha devotees, all of whom have countless years of practice and knowledge under there belt. The joint passion of culture, heritage and musical art was combined to create this flourishing academy.

​Shan - E - Punjab is the best bhangra and giddha academies in North America. We have performed at competitions in various major cities such as Los Angeles, Boston, Detroit, Calgary, Edmonton, Las Vegas, Phoenix , and many more. Competed in over 180 competitions and placed first at over 100 competitions. We help our students build confidence, important life skills and lifelong relationships.

2nd Place: Chardi Jawani
Chardi Jawani is a distinguished Bhangra club based in Fresno, CA, known for its cultural dedication. As a closely-knit brotherhood, their mission is to preserve and promote their cultural heritage and values, with the goal of passing it on to the next generation. The club's roots trace back to its formation by dancers who trained at the esteemed GHG Sangeet and Dance Academy.

With a steadfast commitment to their cause, Chardi Jawani strives to bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary youth culture. Through dynamic performances, they aim to bring the essence of Bhangra to the forefront, resonating with the spirit of today's generation. In pursuit of their goal, the club envisions presenting a captivating showcase of folk Bhangra, enriched with innovative and imaginative elements.

3rd Place: Rangla Punjab
Rangla Punjab Arts Academy is a folk arts institute that was established in 2016, and is based out of Surrey, British Columbia. We are a community based organization that is committed to serving our community through diverse projects. We also strongly endorse in promoting our Punjabi Virsa, Maa-Boli, and Culture. Our vision is to establish a platform in which our younger generations to come are embedded to their roots, mother language, and the Folk Art of Bhangra. We take pride in connecting with our community around the world through the art of Bhangra.

We also have the following awards that were given out:

Best Mix: Chardi Jawani

Best Jodi (couple): Shan-E-Punjab

Best Vardi (Costumes): Young Bhangra

The over three-hour event featured special performances from Bhangra legend, Miss Pooja who lit the stage on fire at the end of the event!  She has massive hit songs like Mera Mahi, Desi Jatt, Seeti, Aashiq, Boli, Gidha Pao, Photo, DJ Vajda, Case, Aetbaar and MANY more! She has over 4,000 songs to her name! 

Shan-A-Punjab was the food vendor of choice and sold snacks, dinner and drinks at the venue. Some of major sponsors included E3UK, Chardikala Time TV, Mass Cultural Council, Ritu Goswami (realtor), Asian Community Fund (part of Boston Foundation) and Sling.  The show will be aired worldwide shortly and was shown live on youtube on the night of the event!

"It's always great to keep expanding year after year. This year we had Chardikla Time TV help support us nationally and globally to help expand the reach of Bhangra and all of the things we're doing.  We also had more than 30% non-south asians attend as we continue to attract a more diverse audience each year. It's a true pleasure to see how many people attend this event and that we're at the center of all of it," stated Rohit Bhambi, the co-founder of Boston Bhangra.
