Violence against women and girls in India is pervasive, with worse outcomes for those in marginalized communities such as Dalit and Adivasi women in rural India. Not only are they disproportionately impacted but they also face significant barriers to receiving justice. Grassroots organizations, who are embedded within the communities they serve, play an important role in facilitating this journey to justice for countless survivors. However, not much is known about the complexity of barriers women face in their journey to justice and the specific ways in which grassroots organizations support survivors.

Addressing this gap, we highlight the vital work survivor-led grassroots organizations in rural India do to help provide justice for women and girls experiencing violence.

After a brief presentation of the report, we will have a panel discussion with the founders of our three incredible partner organizations, and co-creators of the report. We will hear about their experiences working against gender-based violence on the ground, as changemakers and survivors themselves.

Ms. Meena, Founder. Sahjani Shiksha Kendra works in education, literacy and empowerment of marginalised women and adolescent girls in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, India. The team uses strategies such as village-level women's groups, community rallies, engaging men and boys, and advocating cases of survivors with the administration.
Ms. Neelam Besra, Founder. Jharkhand Mahila Uthan works in Chuurchu, Jharkhand, sensitizing the community on gender equality and gender justice, through workshops and training programs and enhacing women's leadership working with elected women representatives to introduce a feminist lens to developmental initiatives.
Ms. Ranjita Pawar. Samarthya Kalyankari Sanstha, based in Osmanabad, Maharashtra, are a Denotified & Nomadic Tribe (Indigenous) youth and women-led organization working to improve access to quality primary education, strengthen community-based organizations, and empower women and girls to help them become changemakers of the future.

This is a bilingual event taking place in both Hindi and English.
