Singer Falguni Shah Wins Grammy For Best Children’s Music Album

Falguni Shah, who is a singer of Indian origin and goes by the stage name Falu, was nominated in the Best Children's Music Album category at the Grammys 2022. She won the award and shared photos on Instagram posing with her trophy.

In the caption, she wrote, "I have no words to describe today’s magic. What an honor to perform for the opening number of the GRAMMY Premier Ceremony, and then take home a statue on behalf of all the incredible people who worked on A Colorful World. We are humbled and thank the Recording Academy for this tremendous recognition. THANK YOU!"

The singer is based in New York and blends classical Indian melodies with contemporary western sounds. In the past, she has collaborated with artists like AR Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire, Yo-Yo Ma for The Silk Road Project, Philip Glass and Wyclef Jean.

Falu has been nominated for a Grammy earlier too for the Best Children's Music Album category. During the early years of her career in Mumbai, the singer trained rigorously in Jaipur musical tradition and in the Banaras style of Thumrie under Kaumudi Munshi. She also studied under the legendary sarangi/vocal master Ustad Sultan Khan.

Falu moved to the US in 2000 and was appointed as a visiting lecturer at Tufts University. According to her website, the internationally-acclaimed singer-musician Carnegie Hall's ambassador of Indian Music in 2006.

"She was appointed Carnegie Hall’s ambassador of Indian Music in 2006, where her shows at Zankel Hall have consistently sold out. Falu has performed for President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House and was also the featured performer at the Time-100 gala in 2009. Her songs have appeared on numerous compilations and soundtracks," as per Falu's official website.

Currently, the singer performs and writes with her band, Falu & Karyshma, an internationally recognised group that weaves together rock, jazz and the "intricacies of India’s deepest musical traditions."
