Assistive Technology For Vision Impaired People

The IIT Association of Greater New England is kicking off the year 2021 with it’s first virtual event in partnership with Vision-Aid.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports there are more than 285 million visually-impaired people worldwide including 40 million in India. There is a strong passion, desire and need to develop assistive technology devices to support visually-impaired people to empower them to live with independence and dignity by improving the quality of their lives.

This talk presents the work of ASSISTECH, IIT Delhi in developing solutions aimed at independent mobility and education of visually impaired in India and other low-income countries. Some of the innovations includes such as SmartCane Device or OnBoard Bus identification system.

The webinar will be presented by Prof. M. Balakrishnan Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Delhi.  He obtained his B.E.(Hons.) in Electronics & Electrical Eng. from BITS Pilani in 1977 and Ph.D. from EE Dept. IIT Delhi in 1985. He has nearly 44 years teaching and research experience. At IIT Delhi, he has held many senior academic leadership positions. ASSISTECH, a laboratory and research group founded by him along with Prof. P.V.M. Rao (Mech Eng.), is involved in developing a number of assistive devices targeted towards mobility and education of the visually impaired.  He has been recipient of three national awards, ACM Eugene L Lawler award and very recently IIT Delhi's Life Time award for his work in the disability space.

About IIT AGNE: Indian Institutes of Technology Association of Greater New England (IIT AGNE) is a charitable organization dedicated to engaging in and supporting charitable educational and scientific research activities. It was incorporated by by a group of engineering and technical professionals that were initially drawn together due to their common educational foundation from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and residing in the Greater New England area including the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Vermont.
