Rebuilding Lives - AIF And NDTV Campaign For Migrant Workers

06/11/2020

Join NDTV and the American India Foundation to rehabilitate migrant workers and help them in their villages to keep their children in school, to ensure they have enough to eat and to help them with new skills so they recover their lost livelihoods.

The campaign is now live. You can watch a promo video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erHDmUNrMec

Given its strong humanitarian mandate, AIF has so far served close to 250,000 people as part of COVID-19 relief efforts in India. While we continue to provide immediate relief, we also realize the need for medium to long-term rehabilitation of communities devastated by this unprecedented crisis.

Our focus is on rebuilding the lives of migrant workers and their families who have faced a disproportionately higher brunt of the COVID-19 induced lockdown in their cramped shelters, and after that an the exodus from cities to their homes in faraway villages – many of them walking with their sparse belongings hundreds of miles in the hot summer, hungry and fatigued beyond belief. The luckier ones could hitch a ride on packed vehicles or crowded buses and trains.

The end of their journey marks the beginning of bigger challenges: the question of their very sustenance with scarce food and hygiene, the need for immediate income, pregnant women needing access to basic healthcare in an overburdened public health system and their children, especially girls, needing continuation in education after months of school closure. Even the migrant families who have stayed back in the cities and those who would return, need support in rehabilitation of their lives and livelihoods as the country slowly limps to normalcy. This is where you can make a significant difference!

AIF has joined hands with NDTV, India’s pioneer in television and digital journalism, to raise awareness and funds that are urgently required to provide effective and holistic rehabilitation of these migrant communities through health, education and livelihoods, at source and destination geographies. The 21-day campaign will include a globally televised 2-hour Live Telethon from 7-9 pm IST on 14th June hosted by Dr. Prannoy Roy, co-founder and executive co-chairperson of NDTV, with a panel of distinguished guests and celebrities.
