Burlington’s Kumon Math and Reading Center, Burlington Academy held its second Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday, March 20, 2004. A number of local students from Burlington and neighboring towns were honored with trophies and medals in recognition of their academic excellence. These awards are a part of an incentive program that recognizes all Kumon students working ahead of their school grade level. About 150 people attended the ceremony and over 48 students were honored. Some of the students received Advance Honor Roll Award in Math or Reading or both.

“Kumon is an after-school program, very popular amongst the Indian Americans. It is geared towards fostering learning excellence” says Ashu Mithal who runs the academy with Manjusha Inamdar. “The Kumon Method is designed to complement the student’s regular learning program at school. Whether students attend Kumon for enrichment or remediation, our curriculum is designed to enable them to progress independently and with confidence.”

Every 3 months Kumon compiles a list of students who are advanced above their grade level. Kumon North America ranks them with all students enrolled in the program in North America and honors them with “Advanced Student Honor Roll” (ASHR) award. Students who received trophies are on this Advanced Student Honor Roll List. It is a way of recognizing the student for his/her hard work, perseverance and commitment. It motivates them and gives them and us a feeling of accomplishment.
