In Conversation With Antra Bhargava, CEO SuVitas

Nirmala Garimella

Antra Bhargava is an Honours Law Graduate from Trinity College, Dublin and a qualified Chartered Accountant from ICAI. Born and bred in Calcutta, West Bengal, she is an avid sportsperson and voracious reader. One of India’s first and youngest female blackbelts in Taekwondo, she was also the youngest Female referee in the Indian National Games in 1998.

Tell us more about your journey to SuVitas?

Having bust my knee (ACL Reconstructive arthroscopy) as a sportsperson, I know firsthand the pain and trauma of recovery post surgery. This gives me a unique empathy with each of the residents we cater to at SuVitas. As a professional, I worked across Europe and US for several years in finance and strategy. Eventually I moved back to India as CFO of a US headquartered Drug safety services company.

How did you come across this role?

Shortly after my return to India, I had a healthscare and for about 2 weeks was living in dread of a cancer diagnosis. This luckily turned out not to be the case but I determined to see this as a sign and changed my career path towards social impact. The industry that I was most drawn to, and where I believed I could make a significant impact with my global exposure, ethics and passion was healthcare. Serendipitously, the same week I came to this conclusion, Mr Sateesh Andra, the founder of SuVitas reached out to me via LinkedIn and invited me to visit the Hyderabad facility of this exciting emerging healthcare startup that focused on inpatient clinical rehabilitation and quality of life. My visit convinced me that they had the right vision, people, product and approach to match my passion and I felt instantaneously that I had come home. The rest, as they say, is history.

As CEO what is your vision for the company?

The name SuVitas is derived from Su – meaning “Good” in Sanskrit and Vitas – meaning “Life” in Latin. The Good Life is all about Quality which in Healthcare is best embodied by the term Wellness. I would like to see SuVitas as the leading global centre of excellence that helps people to live their best possible life in all aspects of Wellness (there are 8 categories) and I strive to live that way myself first. We currently do the hardest bit of this which is when people have gone to ground zero physically, emotionally and socially and slowly rebuild them to “Live Again”. Over time I would like bring our learnings from this complex area to prevent folks getting into such a state in the first place, whether it is by teaching them about proper nutrition, giving them emotional health tools, improving their fitness or bringing awareness about the use of helmets and seatbelts (since most of the cases we see are from road traffic accidents and stroke / cardiac).

What is Suvitas major focus?

SuVitas is India’s first transition care chain that provides Quality of Life clinical interventions for patients that require long term care post hospitalisation. These intensive rehabilitation programmes help get a patient to an early, effective and empowered recovery from conditions such as stroke, brain and spinal injury, and post joint replacements, cardiac surgeries and even in early stage cancer. We aim to heal a patient using a comprehensive approach such that they go home to live their best possible normal life.

What are the various services that it offers?

There are essentially 3 pillars of SuVitas care:

1. Personalised Care Plans crafted for each patient that covers all aspects of their individual recovery requirements and is supervised by our Chief Medical Officer who is a US board certified Geriatrician

2. A Multidisciplinary Team that works collaboratively on each patient to deliver the required care based on established Clinical Protocols. These consist of 24/7 doctors and skilled nurses, full time therapists (physio, speech/swallow, occupational and respiratory), dietitians and clinical psychologists.

3. All of the above delivered in a state of the art facility with a home like environment and only private rooms with private abled bathrooms.

How can NRI's take advantage of the opportunity that SuVitas offers?

Our primary offering for the NRI community is geriatric mobilisation and respite care. Often expats in the US have family members (parents and grandparents) who for various reasons choose to remain in India and live there. As they age, these folks may face a host of medical challenges from one off surgeries such as joint replacements/ hip fractures to sudden illnesses or develop chronic conditions such as Dementia. The NRI caregiver has to rush down leaving challenging job situations and other commitments to take care of such sudden unexpected adverse events. With the elderly, recovery is a slow process and the Indian family living abroad finds it extremely difficult to support from afar. This causes the NRI much stress as they want to do their best but are constrained because of their responsibilities abroad. In several such cases, SuVitas has treated their relatives as their own and ensured that the local caretaker is trained to handle the beloved person when they are discharged home. With WiFi facilities on hand, the NRI can track the recovery of the relative at the SuVitas facility through Video calls. Our Team keeps the NRI in the loop and provides them regular updates on progress. This gives all the people who care much respite and allows the relative to recover at their own pace. We provide a safe and kind atmosphere for such folks to recover their best possible life and delay the onset of any chronic conditions with lifestyle improvements and finally train the local caregiver to handle the relative in the absence of the NRI. So basically you can rest easy knowing that SuVitas will care for your folks back in India exactly as you would want them to be taken care of.
