SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS ON 02/26/04

PROBLEM # 1

Two mice are racing around the perimeter of a square whose sides are 2 feet in length. They start at the same vertex (corner) and both go in a clockwise direction. One mouse travels at a constant rate of 1 foot per second and the second mouse travels at a constant rate of 2 feet per second. After 22 seconds, how far apart will the mice be?

SOLUTION

2 feet.

PROBLEM # 2

Using the digits in 1996 and any operations, write an equation that has the number 6 as the answer.

SOLUTION

One solution: 6*1*(9/9)) = 6.

PROBLEM # 3

Square ABCD has a side of length 2. A semicircle with diameter AB is constructed inside the square, and the tangent to the semicircle from C intersects AD at E. What is the length of CE.

SOLUTION

2.5.
